Germany: 1945. Hitler’s once mighty Third Reich is under siege from all sides. In the
west, the Allies are approaching the river Rhine. In the south, the Allies have reached
the Po River valley, the last line of defence in northern Italy. Then, there’s the problem
of the Eastern Front, where the nigh-unstoppable Soviet Red Army have conquered their
lands lost in 1939 and have crossed the Vistula. Their victorious armies are now spent, but
Comrade Stalin senses victory and orders one last offensive into Germany.

In spite of all of this, the German soldier now had something greater than the Führer to
fight for: The Fatherland, his home, and his family. The fighting on the Eastern Front in
1945 is some of the most desperate and intense in the course of the war. The stakes are
clear to both sides, and there can be no option but to vanquish the enemy to claim victory.

42CM “BIG BERTHA” AND
GERMAN SIEGE ARTILLERY
OF WORLD WAR I

In the early days of WWI,
Germany unveiled a new weapon
– the mobile 42cm (16.5 inch)
M-Gerät howitzer. At the time, it
was the largest artillery piece of its kind in the world and
a closely guarded secret. When war broke out, two of the
howitzers were rushed directly from the factory to Liege
where they quickly destroyed two forts and compelled the
fortress to surrender. After repeat performances at Namur,
Maubeuge and Antwerp, German soldiers christened the
howitzers ‘Grosse’ or ‘Dicke Berta’ (Fat or Big Bertha) after
Bertha von Krupp, owner of the Krupp armament works
that built the howitzers. The nickname was soon picked up
by German press which triumphed the 42cm howitzers as
wunderwaffe
(wonder weapons), and the legend of Big Bertha
was born. This book details the design and development of
German siege guns before and during WWI.
NAPOLEONIC LIGHT
CAVALRY TACTICS

During the Napoleonic Wars all
the major combatants fielded large
numbers of light cavalry. These
nimble, fast-moving regiments
performed a variety of vital roles, from reconnaissance and
keeping contact with the enemy during the movement of
armies, to raiding, skirmishing, and the pursuit to destruction
of beaten enemies. In practice, light cavalry were often also
employed for battlefield charges alongside the heavy cavalry.
Featuring period illustrations and specially commissioned
colour artwork, this is the second volume of a two-part study
of the cavalry tactics of the armies of Napoleon and those of
his allies and opponents. Written by a leading authority on the
period, it draws upon drill manuals and later writings to offer
a vivid assessment of how light cavalry actually fought on the
Napoleonic battlefield.
