Well, it has been some time since we last took a look at the American War of
Independence. Back in
WI291
we explored the origins of the rebellion against the Crown,
and the actions around Boston. Fast forward two years (both from 2011 to 2013 for the
magazine and 1775 to 1777 for the rebellion) and we’ll find that things have developed
apace, particularly for the now fully-fledged Revolution.

In the intervening years, George Washington and William Howe have hounded each
other from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania, with the Continental army growing in strength.
With the fate of a soon-to-be nation hanging in the balance, a decisive blow must be
struck. Howe believes a blow to Philadelphia is the way to cut the colonies in half and
bring them back into the British fold. But rather than dividing and conquering, the British
actions only served to strengthen the resolve of the populace, the army, and General
George Washington.
In our theme articles you can read more about the development of the Revolution, the
battles at both Brandywine and Germantown, and learn how to build iconic fencing for

The Allies’ M10 Tank Destroyer
and the Germans’ Sturmgeschütz
(StuG) lll were the unsung
workhorses of the northwest
European battlefields of 1944–45.
While their mission was not
principally fighting one another, their widespread use ensured
their frequent encounters, from the Normandy Bocage, to
the rubble-strewn streets of Aachen.The StuG lll was the
quintessential assault gun, a low-slung, heavily armoured,
turret-less vehicle intended to provide direct fire support for
infantry formations, whilst the M10 3in Gun Motor Carriage
was originally developed as a tank destroyer. However, by
1944 the 3in gun proved ineffectual against the most thickly
armored German tanks, and was consequently relegated to
infantry support too.Widely deployed in roles their designers
had not envisaged, these two armoured fighting vehicles
clashed repeatedly during the 11-month campaign, which saw
the Allies advance from Normandy to the heart of the Reich.

is a skirmish
wargame that captures the flavour
and excitement of such Akira
Kurosawa films as
Seven Samurai
and
Yojimbo.
Players choose from one of several factions
and build forces to battle for dominance and survival in
16th-Century Japan. They may also recruit swords-for-hire to
supplement their forces - masterless ronin, martial arts masters
and secretive ninja will lend their skills to any commander
who can afford them. A full points system, incorporating
a wide range of equipment and skills, allows for detailed
customisation of characters, while scenarios and a campaign
system permit them to gain experience and develop over time.
The fast-paced rules simulate the cut and thrust of hand-to-
hand combat and require players to make tactical decisions in
the middle of a fight, immersing them in an era of war.
