From the editor
This month’s theme takes us back roughly 200 years to the Iberian Peninsula, recently
‘annexed’ by Napoleon Bonaparte. Now there is no doubting the appeal of wargaming
the Napoleonic period: the serried ranks of thousands of colorfully-uniformed infantry,
the gleaming cuirasses of gallant cavalry, and the massed batteries of devastating artillery
all arrayed across European battlefields. But it seems that for every ‘pro’ for the period,
there’s a ‘con’: so much detail to be learned, lots of models to be painted, and the
inevitable sticklers for accurate uniform portrayal (and which battalion was where when).
If you have never gamed the period before, our theme articles will endeavor to show you
not only a host of inspirational photos, but also begin to break down those barriers that
might be getting in your way. If you are a Napoleonic veteran you’ll find the tales told and
the photos shown more than enough reason to pull out the collection and start to play a
few more games, perhaps even some ‘anniversary’ battles?
Looking over our content list to the right, you’ll notice this is what we like to call a
‘meaty’ issue. Most of our articles top the ten-page mark, giving you plenty to sink your
teeth into, from scenarios and painting lessons, to battle reports and painting competitions.
Standing out amongst these is the
Flames Of War
article containing lists for Early War
Soviet forces - a little reminder from the Battlefront team that, even though they’ve been
crazy busy recently with all manner of Version 3 work, they are still working steadily
away on the much-anticipated Early War Eastern Front book!

1260–1500

With the development in the 13th
century of co-operative tactics using
crossbowmen and heavy spearmen,
circumstance began to arise in which the
charge by Muslim horse-archers, and
then by European armoured knights,
could be defied. Infantry were far
cheaper and easier to train than knights,
and potentially there were far more of
them. Tactics emerged by which more
numerous and more varied infantry
played an increasing part in battles. This
book traces these and other examples of
this ‘jerky’ and uneven process through
its regional differences, which were
invariably entwined with parallel cavalry
developments – the balanced army of
‘mixed arms’ was always the key to
success. By the time serious hand-held
firearms appeared on battlefields in
large numbers in about 1500, the face of
medieval warfare had been transformed.
A WORLD AFLAME
– Interwar Wargame Rules 1918–39

Often called the ”Pulp Era”, the years
between the two World Wars have seen
a tremendous surge in interest among
wargamers.
A World Aflame
captures
the adventurous nature of the time
period to present a fun, fast-paced set
of tabletop miniatures rules that can
handle the many diverse conflicts of
the period, from the Chinese Civil Wars
and the “Great Game” in Central Asia,
to the Irish War of Independence and
the bitter ideological warfare of the
Russian and Spanish Civil Wars. The
rules also contain options for the “Very
British Civil War”. This gaming trend
has sprung up in recent years, following
a “what-if” scenario that has Edward
VIII refusing to abdicate the throne,
thrusting the country into civil war in
1938. It is a quirky, fun setting, and
one that is surprisingly popular. Written
by a life-long wargamer,
A World
Aflame
focuses on the daring and
heroism of battles fought in the last
great era of adventure.
WORLD WAR II SOVIET
ARMED FORCES (3) 1944–45
Author: Nigel Thomas
This book presents a detailed analysis
of the Soviet armed forces during the
final days of the war, covering the
soldiers that successfully turned the tide
against the Nazi onslaught and pushed
it back into Germany itself. This final
part of the series documents the Red
Army’s push through Germany to Berlin,
which eventually culminated in the
surrender of the German forces to the
Allies in 1945. It also offers a detailed
breakdown of all the armed forces that
conducted the offensive campaigns on
the Eastern Front, including the army,
air force, paratroopers, navy and NKVD
troops. Its colourful illustrations also
include the uniforms and organizations
of the Russian forces serving against
Japan until the eventual surrender of all
Japanese Imperial forces in August 1945.
