Hello, hello what’s all this? No bagged magazine this month? No plastic frame of figures?
Decals instead! If you are missing your free plastic figure fix please turn to the news on
page 4 to be reassured you will be getting another hit before too long. In the meantime,
why not try your hand with the waterslide transfers that come with this magazine, intended
to decorate your MDF (or otherwise) version of Mega City One; the dystopian futuristic
metropolis that takes centre stage in the forthcoming miniatures game
Judge Dredd: I am the
Law,
by Warlord Games.
Dredd is one of the ‘Fictional Heroes’ that contributes to this month’s magazine theme,
along with Captain Flint and Barry Lyndon. The list could have gone on and on, but as well
as fictional heroes we had a lot of ‘factional’ content to squeeze into this magazine, including
collecting the army of Charles the Bold, gaming the French and Indian War, a springboard
for 17th Century wargaming, Vietnam on the tabletop, large scale convention gaming and
plenty more beside.

This issue of
Wargames Illustrated
comes with a free set of decals for the forthcoming
Judge Dredd: I Am the Law
miniatures game, which probably leaves you wondering if
that spells the end of the ‘Free frame giveaway’ which we have been running with the
magazine throughout 2019. The answer to that question is “No”.
I am pleased to announce we have secured a deal with our friends at Warlord Games
for more plastic frames/sprues to be bagged with
Wargames Illustrated
magazine
throughout 2020.
Next year we will be bagging a plastic frame with the magazine bi-monthly, beginning
with the January issue. So (at the risk of stating the obvious) the January magazine will
come with a free frame, the February issue will not, the March issue will come with a
free frame, the April will not, the May issue will come with a frame... and so on. There
will be no frame with next month’s issue - December 2019.
The plastic frames will continue to be made available free of charge (excluding postage
and costs) to our Prime members.
Looking ahead to 2020 we have some great (broad) themes lined up for you
and we're really excited about both the magazine content and the free frames
we will be offering, as we continue to ‘illustrate wargames’ into our 33rd year.
In the meantime - 2019 isn’t over yet - so let’s get on with the action!

AIR CAMPAIGN 13
The campaign for Guadalcanal, which stretched from
August 1942 until February 1943, centered on Henderson
Field. The airfield was captured by the US on 8 August
and placed into operation by 20 August. As long as the
airfield was kept operational and stocked with sufficient
striking power, the Japanese could not run convoys with
heavy equipment and large amounts of supplies to the
island. Instead, they were forced to rely on night runs by destroyers which
could not carry enough men or supplies to shift the balance decisively against the American
garrison on the island.
The American air contingent on the island, named the ‘Cactus Air Force’, comprised
Marine, Navy and Army Air Force units. It had the challenging mission of defending the
airfield against constant Japanese attacks, and more importantly, of striking major Japanese
attempts to reinforce the island. The mission of neutralizing Henderson Field fell primarily
to the Imperial Navy’s Air Force flying out of airfields in the Rabaul area. The units
charged with this mission were among the most accomplished in the entire Imperial Navy
with a high proportion of very experienced pilots and a superb air superiority fighter (the
famous ‘Zero’). However, the distance from Rabaul to Guadalcanal handicapped Japanese
operations and their primary bomber was terribly vulnerable to interception.
This book traces the air campaign from both sides and explores the factors behind the
American victory and the Japanese defeat. The text is supported by full-colour illustrations
and contemporary photography.
