Following on the back of the last two magazines with themes related to new rulesets:

Death in the Dark Continent
and
WI355 Test of Honour,
the theme for this issue… isn’t
related to any new rules.
Our theme this month is Richard the Lionheart, for two reasons: the reign of one of
England’s most famous monarchs makes for great wargaming, and Richard’s finest hour
- his famous battle at Arsuf, was the subject of this year’s Society of Ancients Battleday.
We were at the Battleday and so able to report on an event which saw Arsuf played with
eight different rulesets in three different scales. See how the SOA members got on by
turning to page 58. We also take a look at ‘Richard the lion cub’ in action in France during
his formative years, and take in some more generic articles which feature 12th Century
modelling and painting.
Away from our theme we have two Designer’s Notes pieces for you this month as Dave
Brown introduces us to his latest Napoleonic rules offering and John Lambshead takes
Bolt
Action
into the realm of ‘what if?’ with his
Campaign Sea Lion
supplement. We also have
a Rules Showcase for the work-in-progress

Beyond Dunkirk?
As you read through the magazine, you’ll discover our ‘Next Issue’ section and learn
all about our theme for the August issue, Dunkirk.
We’ll have articles about the pre-evacuation period and events during what was known as
Operation Dynamo, plus a look at the post-Dunkirk period.
In fact, our Tale of Four Gamers article will be focused on creating forces for use with the
Bolt Action
rules, forces that are suitable for the Battle for France in 1940 and beyond.
We’ve tried to theme our article around the ‘reality’ of an actual invasion of the UK by
German forces enacting the Unternehmen Seelöwe or Operation Sea Lion planning.
This coincides with the Warlord Games worldwide Invasion of Britain Summer Campaign,
which partly uses the
Campaign: Sea Lion
supplement to chart the progress of an alternate
reality where the Germans are able to land troops in Britain. Of course, those who don’t
want to collect forces specifically for this period are still able to take part, using their own
army lists or similar,
Registration for this global event takes place as of 12 July, with the first games being
recorded as of 28 July and the final results shown by 28 August.

SHARPSHOOTING RIFLES OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

At the outset of the American Civil War, the Union Army’s sharpshooters were initially equipped with
the M1855 Colt revolving rifle, but it was prone to malfunction. Instead, the North’s sharpshooters
preferred the Sharps rifle, an innovative breech-loading weapon capable of firing up to ten shots per
minute - more than three times the rate of fire offered by the standard-issue Springfield .58-caliber rifled
musket. Other Union sharpshooters were equipped with the standard-issue Springfield rifled musket or
the .56-56-caliber Spencer Repeating Rifle.
Conversely, the Confederacy favoured the Pattern 1853 Enfield rifled musket for its sharpshooters and
also imported from Britain the Whitworth Rifle, a .45-caliber, single-shot, muzzle-loading weapon
distinguished by its use of a twisted hexagonal barrel. Featuring specially commissioned artwork, this is
the engrossing story of the innovative rifles that saw combat in the hands of sharpshooters on both sides
during the Civil War.

AROUND THE GLOBE
Prepare for a Personal Crusade!
Although it isn’t out until April 2018, we thought you’d like to know about this
upcoming set of rules in the Osprey ‘blue book’ range.
Designed to represent small scale actions during the Crusades, this game is apparently
focused upon between four and fourteen miniatures.
Each miniature appears to be a character in their own right, with their own abilities
and equipment. Some form of character progression system will be built into the
rules, so it may be worthwhile investing in a number of miniatures that are sculpted
in a variety of ‘stages’ – perhaps leather jerkin, developing into chainmail and helm,
then moving onto plate armour later. Squire, to young knight, onto veteran warrior?
Or perhaps upgrades to weaponry and equipment?
The game is designed to make use of 25 – 28mm miniatures and could perhaps
warrant the creation of a range of figures that can be adapted. This would serve those
who wish to use the same character as time goes on.
Although this is a small skirmish game rather than a larger or mass battle experience,
every opportunity to game with Crusade era miniatures sounds good. Time will tell
how the final system plays but new takes on classic eras are good to see.
