For the theme of this issue of
Wargames Illustrated,
we explore cavalry on the battlefields
throughout history, on the tabletop and on the painting table. We’ve got cavalry at Waterloo,
in the First and Second World Wars, across America and in medieval Europe.
Away for the cavalry we have a Rules Showcase in which we take
Mad Maximilian
for a spin and have great fun playing this 1930s slant on the
Mad Max
movies. We are
also lucky to have an exclusive scenario by author Joe McCullough for his new
Ghost Archipelago
rules.
For this month’s Designers Notes we are joined by our friend from over the Pond Bruce
Weigle, who tells us about finding the game he’s been looking to create for years, in the form
of
1871.
This issue also sees the conclusion of our excellent James II series, with the Battle
of Sole Bay, and we have a couple of articles which are very easy on the eye, in the form of
The Bodkins’ Battle of Crecy game and El Hammad, which features some lovely shots of
the Perrys’ Napoleonic Brits in Egypt.

ARMIES OF THE GREEK-
ITALIAN WAR 1940–41

In October 1940 an Italian army some
200,000 strong invaded Greece across
its largely undefended border with
Albania. Although supported by Great
Britain, at first by sea and in the air
and later by landing British and ANZAC
troops from North Africa, Greece bore the main brunt of the six-month war.
Outclassed in materiel and outnumbered, LtGen Papagos’s Greek army was
so successful against the Italians in north-west Greece that, by 22 November
1940, it was advancing into Italian-held Albania. This would eventually
force Hitler to send in German reinforcements to support his beleaguered
Italian allies, delaying his invasion of the Soviet Union. Complete with
contemporary photographs and full-colour uniform plates, this fascinating
study explores the history, organization, and appearance of the armies of this
oft forgotten conflict.

AROUND THE GLOBE
IT’S ALL HAPPENING AT STUDIO TOMAHAWK
The team at Studio Tomahawk will be releasing a new
supplement for their Congo rules during October.
Mungo
Mah Lobeh
(which translates as the Throne of Thunder),
contains a complete campaign consisting of six adventures.
It recreates the journey of Mary Kinglsey, an expedition that
ended with the column climbing Mount Cameroon.
Alongside the campaign system and the adventures (which
can also be played outside the context of the campaign), this
supplement offers new characters, new animals, alternative
dangerous terrain tables and some optional rules.
The book will come with two figures designed exclusively
for this supplement which will not be sold separately.
And that’s not all from Studio Tomahawk, because the boys from France
are also busy putting together the second edition of SAGA - the Dark
Ages skirmish game that took the gaming world by storm on its release
in 2013. So far Studio Tomahawk are giving very little away, other than
a ‘teaser’ on YouTube which hints that SAGA will be expanding from its
Dark Age roots into a “single rulebook for all settings”.
We’ll bring you more details on both of the above projects

Ghost Archipelago Day, to be hosted by our
good selves here at
Wargames Illustrated.
After
the success of two
Frostgrave
Days attended by

author Joe McCullough, we plan to run the
forthcoming
GA
Day in a similar, all-inclusive
campaign (not tournament!) style.
There will be around twenty tickets available
for the mid-January 2018 event, and
adventurers are advised to visit the
