Rewarding our plucky figures for their heroic deeds on the tabletop is not easy. Whilst
medals for personal valour and honours for regiments are common on the battlefields we
seek to emulate, it’s tricky rewarding our pewter and plastic warriors.
As part of our Battle Honours theme for this issue of
Wargames Illustrated,
we suggest some
ideas for awarding honours to our models and players, mimicking those of real warfare. We
also provide a brief introduction to the history of battle honours, and a couple of our articles
this month feature honourific actions and regiments for you to game.
SAGA
second edition is coming! And in this issue we have an interview with author Alex
Bushel in which we pose your questions (thanks for all the FaceBook posts!) about the new
game. We also take a look at another new game which is causing quite a buzz,
Gangs of
Rome
- this month’s Rules Showcase will give you the lowdown on how it plays.

THE AXIS’ AIR BATTLE FOR
MEDITERRANEAN SUPREMACY
Air Campaign
In 1940, the strategically vital island of
Malta was Britain’s last toehold in the central
Mediterranean, wreaking havoc among
Axis shipping. Launching an air campaign
to knock Malta out of the war, first Italy
and then Germany sought to force a surrender or reduce the defences
enough to allow an invasion. Drawing on original documents, multilingual
aviation analyst Ryan Noppen explains how technical and tactical problems
caused the original Italian air campaign of 1940-41 to fail, and then how the
German intervention came close to knocking Malta out of the war. Using stunning
full colour artwork, this fascinating book explains why the attempt by the Axis
powers to take the British colony of Malta ultimately failed.

Coming in early 2018, The Red
Book of the Elf King is a new set of
rules from Lucid Eye Publications
which charts the Fall of the Elven
Kingdom. The Elf King is missing,
and the noble houses war amongst
themselves in their lust for power.
The ruleset is being written by Rick
Priestley, with a background from the
fertile minds of Steve and Joe Saleh.
Players will take the part of one of the
many Thanes or Lords and their Circle
of companions as they battle across
the tabletop, using weaponry, Rude
and Glamour magick to defeat those
who would stand against them.
The rules are currently planned to be
offered in an A4, softback edition,
with ongoing support from Lucid
Eye’s website. In addition, Steve Saleh
will be sculpting a whole range of
characterful figures designed for use
with the game.
We’ll be bringing you more on the
game in a future issue along with our
conversation with Lucid Eye and Rick
in the Interactive (iPad) version of
Wargames Illustrated.

“To the Strongest!” World Championships
The fourth annual “To the Strongest!” World Championships will take place in the village of
Chalgrove in Oxfordshire on
Saturday 24th February.
The “Worlds” is quite possibly the largest 28mm big-battle ancient/medieval tournament
in, well, the world. The event combines a competitive spirit and a genuinely friendly and
relaxed atmosphere.
We expect to have over 40 competitors, coming from all parts of the UK and as far afield as
Belgium. If you lack a suitable 28mm army, we may be able to lend you one.
Simon Miller, the author of the rules, will be competing so you might be able to literally
“beat him at his own game.”

historical pieces and one for non-historical, with awards

opportunities to be introduced to gaming and miniature
painting. The painting contest will include a ‘Young Guns’
category with these gamers in mind.
