possibility that we’ve already heard
our album of the year. e Specials’
Encore
arrived just 32 days into
2019 and immediately confounded
any doubts over the wisdom of tampering with
such a weighty legacy. Of course, whether it should
be regarded technically as a Specials album is a moot
point, and dare we ponder how good
Encore
could have
been had the seemingly impossible happened and Jerry
Dammers joined his old mates in the studio?
You can’t tell e Specials’ story, or
indeed the tale of 2 Tone, without
speaking to Jerry Dammers. So that’s
exactly what we’ve done this issue.
In something of a coup for our humble
magazine, Coventry’s second most
famous son, Dan Biggane, returns
to his home city this month for an
exclusive interview with his idol.
Dammers joins his former bandmates, plus members
of e Beat and e Selecter to tell the inside story
of a label that both de ned a musical genre and
gave hope and pride to an inner-city area in the
grips of social deprivation. Just like Motown,
Factory and several other labels that
epitomised or even spawned genres, it’s
impossible to think of 2 Tone without
the city that gave birth to it.

Sleaford Mods are back with a new record, and just
as outspoken as ever, while New York’s e Antlers
re ect on the 10th anniversary of the sublime
Hospice.
Reissued a decade on, it’s a remarkable record made in
uniquely trying, grief-stricken circumstances.
We can’t let this issue pass without mentioning the 12th
edition of Record Store Day. If you’re reading this before
the big event, hopefully you’ve got your copy of the o cial
guide we published with issue 25 at the
ready, and have circled your targets.
We’ve spent many happy evenings in the
Long Live Vinyl
local drawing up our
own shopping lists, with Bingo Hand
Job, Bob Dylan, Charlie Parker, e Fall,
Frank Black, IDLES, Julien Baker and
Van Morrison a few of the must-haves.
Whatever your highlights, we hope
you get what you want, but more importantly that you
continue to support your local independent record
shop throughout 2019 and beyond.
Finally, it’s another farewell as our art editor
Andy Cottle moves on to pastures new.
Andy has played a huge part in shaping
the magazine’s visual identity and has
put his big Black Country heart into
