SAM
has taken the unusual step
of allocating a sizeable proportion of its
page space to what some might regard as a
1/24 ‘superkit’, something we usually shy away
from as we prefer to tailor the content to
include as much of the readership as possible.
Large scale multi-engine types make for
impressive models, but how many of us have
either the budget or the space not only to buy
them in the rst place, but to display them once
built? The kit in question here, however, is
Meng’s Triplane, something many of us might
regard as a curiosity on account of its scale, 1/24
being even more of a niche than 1/144, but this
particular kit has piqued the editorial interest on
account of the value it represents in terms of
price and buildability. I hesitate to apply the
term ’pocket money kit’, but relatively speaking
it’s an affordable option in this day and age, is a
highly detailed and beautifully designed model
of an iconic type, and will t into most display
cabinets once nished without obliging the
modeller to build an extension.
Of course if you are not interested in the type
– and let’s face it, who wouldn’t have preferred a
1/24 Avro Bison - this may seem of little
relevance, but I would urge you to read it in any
case as the techniques and skills involved in the
build are transferable – as with all the articles we
run – and Dave Hooper’s knowledge of the
subject goes hand in hand with his undeniable
skills to present another masterclass in World
War I modelling.
At the opposite end of the kit spectrum I am
delighted to present the latest
Workbench
feature from Brian Derbyshire, in which a kind of
‘Frankenstein’s monster’ takes shape as a P-66
Vanguard, built up largely from spares box parts.
The approach is completely different, in that it’s
a scratchbuild rather than a superkit, but the
resulting article offers every bit as much as the
Meng build in terms of technique and skills. That
both authors are founding members of IPMS
Special Interest Groups should come as no
surprise. It has long been
SAM’s
policy to court
expertise wherever possible, and I am grateful to
both Dave and Brian for the opportunity to
present such diverse, but authoritative pieces.
I highlight these two articles purely because I
nd a pleasing symmetry in their dissimilarity.
Elsewhere we have something for everyone, and
every article offers a ‘how to’ either in terms of
modelling skills or aircraft knowledge, and that
is why
Scale Aircraft Modelling
has remained the
most essential read for modellers for more than
four decades.
