indignation—often in a single
song. A talent as celestial
as Aretha Franklin’s comes
along so rarely that, three
years after her death, people
are still trying to understand
its origins. That may explain

Queen of Soul, the subject of
both a recent TV miniseries

from singing at her preacher
father’s Detroit church

Inarguably a music legend,
Franklin was also endearingly

Her soap operas.

for which she sang
in a 1994 ad. Because she
was so private, some fans
may have learned only from
obituaries that she lost her
mother at the age of 10 and
became a mother herself
three years later. How much
had trauma figured into her
gift? “The way she found to
express herself was through
her music,” says Jennifer
Hudson (interview page 84),
who plays Franklin in
Respect.
That, she suggests, is “why it
hits the way it hits to this day.”
