As we enter 2022, naturally it’s a time for new
beginnings. The past year, in many ways, was
just as challenging as the year before it. The
global pandemic is still ongoing, and continuing
to disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ people.
Transphobia has been rife in the British press and
across the globe, leading to an increase in anti-
LGBTQ+ sentiment. Trans lives are being used by
a ruling class to divide and conquer, and it’s never
been more clear that the trans community needs
our support. We must keep that at the forefront of
our minds as we step into the new year.
But as we look ahead, we must do so with a
renewed sense of optimism and a re-energised
enjoy the freedoms they deserve. Calling out
transphobia, supporting trans-focused charities,
and marching in solidarity with Trans Pride are
just some of the ways we can all come together to
ensure we protect those most vulnerable. We also
need to keep the pressure on the UK Government
therapy – something they have been promising
since 2018 but have yet to bring into law. We will
also be marking 50 years of Pride in the UK. On
Pride march through central London, and so this
we’ve come and just how much further we need
to go. What the past few challenging years has
afforded us is a refocused approach to Pride as
a protest movement. That needs to carry through
to these celebrations in 2022 and be the leading
charge during such an historic moment.
There is also much to look forward to in 2022
for the LGBTQ+ community. In our Queer Guide to
music, books and moments that we can expect in
the 12 months ahead. Queer culture has always
been a powerful catalyst for change in telling our
stories and platforming voices that can reach
those beyond our collective experiences. Our
January 2022 cover star is the new reigning queen
of Drag Race UK, Krystal Versace, who promises
to usher in a new era of drag. At just 20 years old,
she is the youngest winner the global franchise
has ever crowned. She quite literally is generation
Drag Race, having been inspired by the series
growing up (she was just seven years old when
Drag Race phenomenon that Krystal’s experience
with the artform was nurtured from such a young
age – and we’re certain her victory will inspire
millions more to embrace who they are and follow
their ambitions.
It’s no mistake that as queer culture continues
and stories become more prominent across
society, and progress is made, that those who
oppose us will start to shout louder. But we are
winning this battle. It might not always seem like it
and we should never take what we have achieved
so far for granted, but as a community and with our
allies we will continue to push for greater equality.
We have faced some of the toughest years in
modern history, but as a community who uplifts
every single person under the LGBTQ+ umbrella,
we can pave the way for brighter days ahead.
