This book of short stories is dedicated to my hometown of Jacksboro,
Texas, the cradle of all my dreams—place of early and enduring life les-
sons from home, church, school, friends, and foes that shaped my destiny.
To a road, the Jacksboro Highway, leading to Fort Worth and TCU, the cen-
ter of a larger universe. To a steel-jawed, jug-headed range horse named
Billy whose bone-jarring trot took me across the wide and wild prairies of
Jack County, daydreaming about who I wanted to become.
