From the editor
Stored in an innocuous looking brown box in the basement of the Royal Engineers Museum,
Gillingham, UK, is a set of artifacts that bear testimony to the saint-like reverence with
which General Charles Edward Gordon was held in Victorian Britain: a cigarette box,
containing three unsmoked cigarettes, said to have been left by Gordon; a scrap of paper
which appears to contain the remains of a dead insect, text by the side of the squashed
creature reads "A fly that walked the Gordon nose"; and a broken flagstone, about six inches
in diameter, framed by a wreath of silverware flowers, which bears the inscription “25th
January 1885”, (thought to be) the date of Gordon’s death. This last is said to be a piece of
the ground Gordon was standing on when he was killed, and it was presented to Queen
Victoria - a great admirer of the general.
Gordon was the embodiment of the British Empire, his qualities of firmness, fairness,
Christian faith and morals were exactly what Victoria wanted to export to the four corners
of the world, and it was this ‘crusade’ which landed Gordon in Khartoum in the Sudan on
18 February 1884.
Our theme articles this month are based around the predicament the British found
themselves in after General Gordon had deposited himself in the centre of a warzone
surrounded by rebellious tribesmen (Fuzzy Wuzzies) - led by a fanatical leader, the Mahdi -
who were baying for his blood and the end of British and Egyptian rule in the country.
I hope I’ve not spoilt the story for anyone by telling you that Gordon didn't make it out
alive. His death and the sacking of Khartoum was a bloodbath, unplayable as a war-game,
but the other battles that surrounded both the (ultimately futile) relief effort to save Gordon,
and the (ultimately futile!) first efforts to avenge him are rich in wargaming potential.
The British Army riding camels across the desert, sailors wielding primitive machine guns,
and wild eyed (and haired!) African tribesmen fighting to the death over red sand, can't fail
to stir the wargamer into action.
So "play up, play up, and play the game".

an introduction to the Mahdist Uprising of
1884 - 85. "Give them volleys!" is a quote
by Lieut. Col. Percy Barrow, barked to his
men at the battle of Abu Kru, and we felt
it was a great soundbite which summed
up both the attitude, and determination,
of a colonial army facing a "savage" foe
in the far flung reaches of the Empire.

by re-opening another front in the Sudan in
an effort to inflict retribution on the
Mahdi's chief lieutenant, Osman Digna.
The campaign proved ultimately futile, but

By the end of the First Punic War the
Romans had reduced the capital city
of the Carthaginian Empire to a heap
of ashes and destroyed its culture.
However in 219 BC Hannibal, the
eldest son of the charismatic general
Hamilcar Barca, began the Second
Punic War and was so successful that
he threatened to destroy Roman power
completely. Hannibal was a cool,
thoughtful general, and can arguably
be described as the greatest general
of antiquity. His genius rested on a
mixture of bluff, double bluff, and an
ability to use all troop types to their
best advantage. The battle of Cannae
remains a chef-d’oeuvre to which
generations of subsequent generals

In 1585 the English launched a
pre-emptive strike against Spain, by
attacking her New World colonies. Led
by Sir Francis Drake, in command of 21
ships and 1,800 soldiers, the expedition
struck first at the Canary Islands, then
attacked the city of Santo Domingo
and the treasure port of Cartagena.
Frequently outnumbered, Drake’s
soldiers won a series of spectacular
victories and, laden with treasure, sailed
home to a hero’s welcome.
Renowned aviation author and artist
John Weal presents the last volume of
Fw 190 Aces not previously covered
in the Aircraft of the Aces series. From
mid-1942 until the end of the war,
German fighter pilots were deployed in
the defence of the homeland in an effort
to halt the near-constant bombing raids
by Britain and America. This book tells
their story, from the moment when the
Luftwaffe began to retreat to the dying
days of the Reich. Using previously
unpublished photographs, this book
charts the story of the men who earned
their status as aces while fighting a
hopeless battle to protect the land and
the people they loved.
