Seeds:
There are several reputable websites that will ship quality seeds to the USA.
Indica (versus Sativa) varieties are usually easier to grow, shorter flowering, more
compact, and better for medicinal purposes. The more money you spend on seeds
(generally), the better genetics you’ll get.

Size of light (High Pressure Sodium [HPS] lights are best for single light small grows):
250w HID- 3x3’ growspace – keep lights 12-18” above plants
400w HID- 4x4’ growspace – keep lights 12-24” above plants
If the tops of the plants start to burn, raise the lights.
Keep the lights on 18 or 24 hours/day for vegetative growth, 12 hours/day for flower.
The plants will keep getting taller (stretching) to varying degrees after the light cycle is
switched to flower. Sativas tend to stretch more than Indicas. Sometimes the description
of the seed will tell you the stretch. If not, be conservative. Switch the light schedule to
bloom when the plants are half the height that they can reach while keeping the correct
distance from the lights.
Make sure the growroom is
completely
sealed. When it’s dark it should be completely
dark—light leaks cause problems. To identify light leaks, sit in your room with the lights
off for 5 minutes until your eyes adjust to the darkness. Now, look around and cover with
tape any light coming in to the growroom. Make sure the floor is waterproof by covering
it with a tarp or plastic. Double layer where you can so if one layer gets a hole in it, the
other will still keep light from getting in.

Fertilizing Schedule
First 2 weeks: nothing added
Remainder of vegetative growth: 1 parts nitrogen, 1 part grow, 1/2 part bloom
First 3 weeks of bloom: 1 part grow, 1 part bloom
Remainder of bloom: straight bloom
Final week: just water (distilled water if you want)
Calcium every other week after you start fertilizing, none for the last two weeks.
Seedlings and freshly rooted clones do well in 3.5" square pots. Transplant them once
you can see roots through the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. The general rule for
what size pots you should use is one gallon for every foot of height the plant can reach.
Only female plants will produce acceptable medicine. Be sure to check the preflowers if
you’re growing from seed:

If you’re growing from clones, they are already female, which is good, because they
won’t show preflowers. When you find a male, destroy it immediately.
When the plants have reached 20% of the total height they can reach in the growroom,
you can FIM them once. This is an optional step, but it is a good idea if you’re working
with a limited height.

Buy a magnifier (Radioshack sells 10-30x loupes), and harvest when the trichomes (the
little crystals) are 20% amber.
