eeping a balance of material across the
whole magazine has always been a
priority, and with so many different scales,
genres, and styles of modelling to cater for it’s
been a real pleasure to receive so many new
contributions offering even more scope and
variety. My only regret is that we don’t have the
space to
fit
them all in every month, but every
article received is important, and part of the
overall scheme – it just takes a little time to
fit
a
specific piece in sometimes.
Of course as well as the new writers we still
have the old, and there are a couple of articles in
this month from modellers I have worked with
for years. Firstly Francesco Pigoli’s breathtaking
TSR.2 has arrived at long last. I have been
receiving updates on this for some time, and I
gather that the project has been on and off over
the last few years, but it’s a kit that I regards with
some affection, as I was one of the
first
modellers to build it back when it was initially
released. Before, in fact. Airfix – then still in Hull –
offered a test shot for the magazine I was then
editing, and I arranged a meeting with Mr. Trevor
Snowdon at Ferrybridge services, where he
passed over a carrier bag full of hard cream-
coloured sprues. It was a week or so before
Christmas, and an early January deadline. I built
the kit in record time and featured it in the
magazine, thereafter
finding
its way to the ‘What
If’ SIG, where it turned up regularly at shows in a
display of counterfactual TSR.2s wearing various
markings.
The focus on ‘What If’ around the TSR.2 has
been so sharp that the prototypes themselves
often seem to have been side-lined, so I have
enjoyed Francesco’s article all the more for it
being so thoroughly researched, as well as
beautifully executed.
Elsewhere we have an article from my old
mentor Neil Robinson on Operation Firedog and
post-war Beaufighters. This is packed with
information on modelling the specifics of this
campaign, and again is that combination of
research and modelling that has made this
magazine unique, and so different to other titles
on the news stand.
Let’s try to keep it so!
