The early days of the conflict were
shaped by Army Major Robert Anderson and
Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard,
who faced off at Fort Sumter, and Union
General Winfield Scott, who warned President
Abraham Lincoln that the war would
be long and bloody.
THE TURNING POINT
1863
At Chancellorsville, Va., Confederate
General Robert E. Lee outsmarted his
Northern counter part, Fighting Joe Hooker,
but Lee’s defeat by General George G.
Meade at the Battle of Gettysburg in
Pennsylvania marked the beginning of
the end for the South.

with the Union’s newly appointed
general-in-chief of Northern armies,
Ulysses S. Grant. Yet with almost double
the number of Southern troops, Grant
