VITELOTTES

Vitelotte is an ancient and French cultivar of blue-violet potato.
These delicate fingerless gloves combine the refinement of simple
lace with eyelet patterns, spread along the thumb. You can easily
make the cuff longer and get long Victorian mittens! The purl
stitch of the lace patterns is knitted to fingertips, making the
placement of the final lace stitch patterns easier.
Finished size : 7, but I have a thin hand rather than a large one !
The length of the thumb and fingers can be easily adapted by
decreasing or removing the jersey portion, by repeating 2 or 3
times the lace or by increasing less for the thumb.

Pattern instructions :
CO 48 Sts and join for knitting in the round. Use Long-Tail Cast-
On as it is stretchy. It will be easier to put on your gloves.

Divide into 6 groups, each of 8 stitches (see chart above) and knit
the 6 rows of the chart 3 times. Use markers if you wish.
Thumb increases : increase from the upper part of the wrist to the
base of the thumb. For a shorter hand, increase less. (Check on
your own hand.)
Be careful : don't forget to purl the first stitch of each pattern.
Every stitch of the thumb is in knit stitch.

Place a marker before the central stitch of one of the 6 patterns of
8 sts, and another just after it.
Slip marker, YO, knit central stitch, YO, slip second marker, knit
the rest as mentionned above.
-There is always a YO on both sides of the central stitch.
-Repeat these increases every 3 rows, 11 times in all.
-You get : 11 Sts, the central St, 11 Sts
-Place these 23 Sts on hold and knit the rest of the mitten.
-There are 47 Sts left. Increase one St while joining the row: you
get 48 Sts again. Don't forget to purl the 1
st
St of each pattern.
-Knit 10 rows of 48 Sts in the round (less or no rows at all
according to the length you wish.)
-Knit 3 times the lace chart

-Purl one row
-Cast off loosely (see useful links)
-Thumb :
- Pick up the 23 Sts on hold
- Knit and in the meantime,
decrease regularly 2 Sts/row to get 20 Sts.
- Knit even a few more rows adjusting to the length of your thumb.
- Then, purl 1 row.
- *YO, K2Tog*repeat from * to *
- Purl one row
- Cast off loosely
If it remains a small hole at the base of the thumb, where hand
and thumb meet, use the tail of the thread (the one you used to
pick up the stitches on hold) to close that hole !
Knit the second fingerless glove : they are identical !
