Indiana Jones
Henry J
ones,
Jr.,
nickna
med
Indiana,
was
born
on
July 1,
1899,
the
son
of
Henry
a
nd
Anna Jones.
Du
ring
hi
s
early years
he
trav-
eled
with
his
parents
and
a
tutor
on
hi
s
fa
ther's
lecture
tou
rs
through
Europe, As
ia
and Africa.
Through
these t
ravels he
learned
4
a
great
deal
about
differe
nt
countries a
nd
cul t
ures,
a
nd
ga
ined
a
fondn
ess
for
adven-
tu
res
abroad.
During
a Boy
Scout outing
in
Uta
h
in
1912,
Indy
tried to foil
the plans of robbers
trying
to steal old Spa
nish-American
arti-
facts,
incl
uding
the
Cross of Coronado.
Dur-
ing
his
encounter
with
the
thieves,
Indy
gained
some
of
his most notable
cha
racteris-
tics:
his
affini ty for t
he
bullwhip,
the
scar
across
hi
s
chin
,
an
inte nse fear
of
snakes,
a
nd
his distinctive brown fedora.
In 1916,
Indy
decided
to
follow the adven-
tures
of
his
fri
end
T.E.
Lawrence and
e
n-
li ted
in
the Belgian
army to
fight
agai
nst
Germany.
He
saw
action as
a soldier
in France
a
nd Africa
,
then
worked for
intelligence
throughout
Europe,
includi ng
Austria,
Spain
,
and
Turkey.
After the
Great
War, Indiana
attended
college
at the
University of Chicago,
study-
ing
history
a
nd
a
rchaeology
with
Professor
Abner
Ravenwood. Although Indy
was one
of
Ravenwood's
brightest
students,
the two
later
had
a
bitter
conflict when
Indy
became inter-
ested
in Rave nwood's
daughter,
Marion
,
who
was
infatuated
with
J
ones.
After graduating
from
the University
of
Chicago,
Indy
studied
at the
Sorbonne
in
Paris.
Since
then
he has
taught
at
severa
l
colleges,
including
the
