OK...Fess-up. Who doesn't have a ton of these, without matching containers?
Today, we are going to take those lids and convert them into a Lotus Flower for your New Lotus Wand;
or to upgrade a “Rainbow Wand” into a proper Lotus version. Yes, you CAN make it from sheet metal,
as past books have directed...but these plastics are almost indestructible.
We need:
3 or 4 margarine lids
a 3/4” dowel between 20 and 28” long (the 28” is preferred)
a Brass wood screw, or nail
a little brass or copper wire
5 small flat-washers (optional)
Paints
These margarine lids are often HDPE (no 2 recyclable) plastic, which can safely be reshaped with a
little “baking”.
First, prep the lid surfaces, that will be painted, by lightly rubbing with fine steel wool. We want a little
“tooth” here for the paint to stick, but not obvious scratches. You do not need to remove any
painted/printed on images (applied lables, yes - remove.)
Then we need to cut them out. You can use this template, draw your own, or work from a copy of
Regardie or Chic Cicero. Clean up any stray ink after cutting
Now to shape them.
Find some thing similar in shape to help in the process. It needs to be able to take the heat.
A good choice would be to whip up some baker's clay (1 part Salt, 1 part water, 2 parts flour) and make
your own forms. The clay would need to be made and shaped ahead of time and air-dried (several days)
or baked at less than 200F (say 175) for a few hours.
Various sized, small serving/dipping bowls could be used, even wooden rings (used here).
SAFETY FIRST...You will be dealing with a little heat.
Preheat your oven to 250F (malleable at 248 and melts at 266F)
Fit you cut out pieces to your “form” or “mold” (It's best if you have an inner and outer shell)
Place on foil or baking pan in oven and bake for 20 min.
Remove and allow to cool, in the mold, for a few minutes, rinse with cold water and allow to dry.
Do this for all of the petal pieces (you can do it all at once if you have enough forms.
Now you can paint them, the traditional colors.
10 petaled - white both side. 8 petaled - white inside olive outside (2 pieces), calyx - orange both sides.
On the olive side of the outermost 8 petal piece paint a pattern of 5 veins in black.
