Remnants of War
is a mini-supplement for
Blades in the Dark
focusing
on the aftermath of the Unity War between the Empire and
Skovlan, and the soldiers who’ve now been forgotten.
THE UNITY WAR
Mobile lightning barriers. Trenches, filled with corpses and
possessor ghosts. Tunnels under the frozen earth of Skovlan.
Endless miles of leviathan-teeth palisades, stockades, and barbed
wire.
During the day, you counted the minutes between the whistles,
hoping they’d never ring again. You’d pray that peace had been
achieved, and that no one else would ever have to go over the top.
During the night, you counted the explosions, the shells that
dropped turning
no man’s land into a muddy waste crowded with
ghosts.

No matter the time, you’d clutch your spiritbane charms, and sing
songs to the forgotten gods under Skovlan to stay sleeping. The
spirits of your comrades, and your cousins across the field, would
wake up. They were the biggest threat
not the bombs, not the
machine guns that never stopped firing, not the sappers. It was no
man’s land… It was the deathlands that followed
you, everywhere
you went.
And then it was over. The war ended. The war to end all wars, or so
you prayed. Or so they preached.
You made it back to Doskvol… And the deathlands came with you.
NEW CREW TYPE: LEGIONNAIRES
The Legionnaires Crew type replaces the Bravos Crew type, if chosen.
In a final effort to end the Unity War, the Immortal Emperor began a
campaign of conscription from the cities of the Empire. Afterwards, an entire
generation of young men and women had been displaced
two thirds of them
dead and gone, and the rest returned having left their humor, and in most
cases their sanity, behind. What they saw in the final years of the Unity War
has changed them, and this they’ve brought back to Doskvol.
Soldiers with nowhere to go
Some crews plot and scheme, some crews sneak around, some crews
get entangled with the occult
you fight. The rifle and the blade
are all you have left.
When you play Legionnaires, you earn xp when you enact revenge,
you take back something that was owed to you, or you make
someone else suffer for what’s been done.
What happened on the Front? Who do you blame?

STARTING UPGRADES & CONTACTS
Same as Bravos.
LEGIONNAIRES UPGRADES
Same as Bravos, except replace Ironhook Contacts with:
Unstoppable: Each PC gets an additional severe harm box.
Note that you still
need help
if the first box is filled, but this allows
you to survive a second severe harm being applied to you.
LEGIONNAIRES CLAIMS
Same as Bravos, except replace Bluecoat Confederates, Street
Fence, and Terrorized Citizens with the following respectively:
Legion Depot: You get +1 quality on all weapons and
armor. You get +1d to acquire asset rolls for special military
grade weapons.
There are plenty of left over weapons caches from
the war when the city council thought rebellion could spill over into
Doskvol.
Pensions: During downtime, roll dice equal to your Tier.
You earn coin equal to the highest result, minus your heat.
Whilst they weren’t there for you then, the government can be coerced
into giving you your dues now
at least, a bit.
Serviceman’s League:
You get +2 coin in your payoff for
scores that do not involve military or lower-class targets.
Everyone who served with you remembers, and the pockets of the
many are deep when everyone chips in.
LEGIONNAIRES SPECIAL ABILITIES
Same as Bravos, except replace Fiends with:
Siege Ready: When you defend your own holdings
(whether turf, your lair, or your hunting grounds) through
violence, your Tier counts as if it were 1 higher.
You
remember when they came for you in
the trenches. You won’t be
caught like that again.

NEW ITEMS
Webbing: Specialized military
gear designed to help a soldier
carry everything and anything
they could need. When
webbing is worn, you may
choose to have Heavy Load,
but count as Normal Load.
Webbing is quite rare outside of
military garrisons. [0 Load]
Bayonet: A blade that can be
affixed to the front of a rifle
that counteracts its disabilities at
close range. [1 Load]
Trench Mask: An oiled eel-skin hood with a breathing filter, and
two glass lenses. Allows the wearer to resist harmful vapors and
gases. [1 Load]
Fragmentation Grenade: Two explosive devices, each attached to
a long handle so that they can be thrown. When the end is hit, or it
hits something, the explosive inside releases shrapnel in all
directions which is an effective weapon against groups of people.
Each can only be used once, but grants +2 scale when detonated. [1
Load]
Howler Grenade: Like a fragmentation grenade, but packed
instead with shards of leviathan bone, when these incendiaries
explode they disable electrical devices and spirit wards, as well as
acting like a small spirit well
attracting ghosts in the area to the
location of the explosion. Howler Grenades were used to great
effect against entrenched Skovlanders to cause ghostly incursions
behind their lines. [1 Load]

Faraday Armor: A suit of thickened leathers covered in a
crisscrossing pattern of iron bars that are inscribed with runes.
When ghosts attempt to pass through, attack, or possess someone
wearing Faraday Armor, they are deflected and diverted by the
bars instead. Counts as wearing normal armor except it grants
heavy armor against ghosts. [4 Load]
Machine Gun: A large, machine powered, heavy gun that can fire
up to 100 bullets a minute. These impressive and deadly articles of
war require time to set up, and a team of at least two to use, but
when employed they increase an attackers scale by +3. They are
subject to jamming, and always count as at least risky to use. [3
Load]
Gallowmortar: A Gallowmortar is loaded with special shells that
are built in the same fashion as spirit bottles, and can hold up to
three ghosts each. When they are shot, and explode
which is
hauntingly silent
they unleash their captive ghosts to wreak havoc
on their victims. The mortar itself requires setting up and a team of
at least two to use it. [3 Load]
NEW FACTION: IMPERIAL MILITARY
THE IMPERIAL MILITARY
Tier VI. Strong Hold.
The armed forces of the Imperium stationed in Doskvol, and their
commanding officers.
Faction Clock: Incite war with Iruvia. [8] Investigate siphoned
provisions and gear. [6]
Turf:
Paragon,
a naval destroyer (HQ), and several other warships
docked around Whitecrown. Garrisons at Gaddoc Rail Station,
and at the Lord Governor’s stronghold.
