I
am sure I am not the only one
pleased to see the back of 2020
and happy to see 2021.
There have been so many changes in
the world over the last 12 months it is hard
to remember that the current pandemic
was confined to just a few small areas of
the world on the other side of the globe.
In such a short space of time fundamental
change to the way we live, that would probably
have happened anyway over 10 to 20 years
has taken place virtually overnight. The use of
cash has dwindled to almost nothing while the
use of contactless payment has soared and it
is a similar story on the high street many large
retailers have gone for good and smaller stores
struggle as ordering online and home delivery
have become the new norm. A home office for
many is now routine and some have had a lot
more time on their hands than they planned
for in 2020 than they expected last January.
But now 2020 is in the past and we
have a lot to look forward to. In the UK the
vaccination programme is underway with
the chance that we can return to all the
things we have missed last year. For me
the two things that I have missed far more
than I thought I would have been attending
my model club and going to shows.
I was one of the founder members of
Milton Keynes Model Club over 25 years
ago. I have always credited joining the club
as one of the things that changed my life
in ways I never dreamed off. To start my
modelling improved dramatically as we
all learned new skills and techniques from
each other with the added benefit that if you
do not understand something you can ask
questions until you do. It also gave a rhythm
to my life with the monthly meeting a key
date in my calendar around which I would try
and organise my shifts at work and family
holidays (much to the annoyance of my wife!)
I have made some firm friends that have
had a real impact on my life, like Alan Hall
another founder member of our Club who
many will know from the original Airfix
magazine in the 1960s and 70s and Richard
Franks, a former Editor of this magazine.
Without those two gentlemen, I would never
have started writing about my modelling
which eventually 20 years later would lead to
me writing these words as Editor. Like many
clubs, we are hoping to restart our activities in
the spring, and we may even have a few new
members as one side effects of the lockdowns
is a resurgence in interest in plastic modelling.
The other thing I am missing is model shows
- these were always a chance to show off your
work and spend the day chatting with other
modellers from all over the country. Again,
until they disappeared, I had not realised how
much I had structured life around attending
shows in both this country and abroad. Though
many shows in the early part of the year
have already cancelled some of the bigger
shows are already starting to plan for 2021
the first being the Moson Show in Hungary
on the 24th and 25th April followed in the UK
by ModelKraft in Milton Keynes on the 9th
May. We hope to be attending both of these
Events with the MA Publications Stand. Our
first shows since Plastic Winter in Bratislava,
Slovakia way back in November 2019 and these
will be followed by many many more, hopefully
enabling the return of the much-missed show
diary in the back pages of the magazine.

So, though it still dark outside and thing may
seem pretty bleak 2021 promises to be a far
better year than the one that has just passed.
Until then stay safe and I hope to see many of
you when we eventually emerge blinking into
the light in the spring ready to show off a whole
year of modelling projects to an eager world.
