Machine Learning Overview
Machine learning is a discipline that emerged from the
general field of artificial intelligence only quite recently
To build intelligent machines researchers realized that these
machines should learn from and adapt to their environment
It is simply too costly and impractical to design intelligent systems
by first gathering all the expert knowledge ourselves and then
hard-wiring it into a machine
Formal definition: “A computer program is said to learn from
experience E with respect to some class of tasks T and
performance measure P, if its performance at tasks in T, as
measured by P, improves with experience E”

Another definition: “The goal of machine learning is to
program computers to use example data or past experience to
solve a given problem.”
