FS DUNK
Lead ship of the Dunkerque-class of battleships along with
Strasbourg,
built
for the French Navy in the 1930s. Before the Second World War, the two ships
formed the navy’s '1st Division of the Line' and at the beginning of the war, both
ships led the search for German commerce raiders.

The keel of
Dunkerque
was laid down on 24
December.
She was launched on 2 October.

Sailed on her first major cruise and
visited the ports of Fort-de-France,
in the Antilles and Dakar, Senegal
before being assigned to the Atlantic
Squadron.
Joined
Strasbourg
and visited a
number of British ports which included,
Liverpool, Oban, Lock Ewe, Scapa Flow
and Rosyth. As war broke out
Dunkerque
joined HMS
Hood
in an unsuccessful
attempt to track down the German
battleships
Scharnhorst
and
Gneisenau
after they sank the British armed
merchant cruiser HMS
Rawalpindi.
Dunkerque
was very badly damaged
during the attack on Mers-el-Kébir and
was beached to avoid her being sunk.
She returned to France for permanent
repairs and was later scuttled to prevent
her from getting in to the hands of the
Germans. Italy took control of the ship
and started to dismantle her.

Following the Italian surrender to the Allies, the
Germans took control of what was left of
Dunkerque.
She was condemned to scrap on 15 September and
renamed Q56.
Her remains which amounted to 15,000 tonnes was
sold for demolition on 30 September for 226,117,000
francs.
