Considering the Warrior has been in
active service since the 1980’s in many
guises, modellers haven’t been offered
much choice in 1:35, or in any scale for
that matter. Academy and Accurate
Armour resin kits have been the only
providers of the ‘Mechanised Combat
Vehicle 80’ (MVC-80) in thirty-fifth, so a
modern tooled kit has been long
overdue; who better than Meng to step
up and provide just that?

We had heard about Meng’s plans for the kit some time ago.
These things take time to get right but it was no surprise to us
when the kit was announced and we were keen to see how it built
once our samples arrived amidst the Covid-19 chaos.
Meng have gone for their initial release of the Warrior (here’s
hoping other versions will follow) as the up-to-date TES(H) vehicle
used in Afghanistan during Operation Herrick. The ‘Theatre Entry
Standard’ (TES) vehicles were modified to suit the specific needs
under an Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR) in 2009, with
around 70 vehicles being upgraded and delivered via C-17
transport aircraft in June of 2011. The upgrades (costing a total of
around 30 million Pounds) included upgraded brakes, suspension
and final drives (to deal with increased weight), increased armour
(including belly and bar armour), and driver’s vision equipment
including rear camera and thermal vision. Smaller details such as
Perspex armour for sighting equipment and wire-cutting hooks
have all been captured in the kit.

Meng’s presentation is first-rate and expecting their usual sand-
coloured styrene, we were surprised to see a pale grey colour
which was tricky to photograph. Nevertheless, the moulding and
detail are to their usual high standards, particularly impressive was
the handling of the builder-friendly bar armour. Hardcore modern
vehicle modellers may wait for aftermarket photo etch to create
this but, personally, I couldn’t stand the pain! There are several
photo etched parts provided without attachment points on a clever
adhesive backing sheet. Also included are painting masks for the
tyres and track blocks. Talking of tracks, these are among the best
individual links I’ve ever assembled; the links are bagged with one
tiny attachment point designed to ‘twist’ off. Believe me, it works
better than cutting as I tried both ways. The links are placed in a
jig and pre-spaced pins are pushed into place providing robust,
fully working tracks that work great in tandem with the working
torsion bar suspension arms.
Nicely moulded clear parts include vision blocks and
armour with the usual lamp lenses, and there’s a
beautifully machined brass 30mm RADEN gun
barrel, which is a welcome inclusion. The kit includes
some nice design touches to help the modeller along
with the build; the side armour is designed with
sturdy plugs so the whole assembly can be removed
and replaced without adhesive, which is essential
whilst painting. Although no interior detail is included
in this kit, the rear door, roof hatches, and driver’s
hatch all include internal details and are posable. The
detail and fit throughout is a pleasure. What first
appears to be a complex vehicle is handled in such a
way that any modeller with a little experience should
find this kit a lot of fun and look brilliant straight from
the box. No kit is perfect though, surely? Let’s have a
closer look...
