Welcome...
I’ve previously talked about how Brexit
may, or may not, affect the toy soldier
hobby and I guess we’ll possibly ind out
all the implications it could have next
year.
Possibly a bigger impact to the hobby
during 2020 will be the virus COVID 19,
often referred to as Coronavirus. This
horrible lu-like virus that emerged in the
Chinese city of Wuhan during December
has caused, at the time of writing,
over 3,600 deaths and put a stop to a
considerable amount of the production
within China’s manufacturing industry.
I was personally due to travel to China
(for my ‘day job’) at the end of February
but with almost all major European
airlines stopping direct lights, and
di iculties crossing to and from Hong
Kong, my trip is postponed inde initely
at present. The human toll from this
new virus is bad, although thankfully it
appears at present it is not as deadly as
SARS, however the economic impact
both within China and globally could
well be felt for some time to come. This
brings me back to my original point
of will it affect the hobby. Taking in to
consideration that the ‘big boys’ (and
by this I mean King & Country, First
Legion, W. Britain, Tom Gunn and John
Jenkins) all produce in China, I can see
both the volume of new releases, and
also availability generally of igures and
vehicles by these makers, slowing during
at least the irst six months of this year.
I guess we will just have to wait and see
what, if any, impact COVID 19 does have.
The main thing is that China and the rest
of the world can get it under control and
hopefully come the summer it will fade
into the background as SARS did back
in 2003.
Anyway, on to a happier topic - this
issue. There’s the usual mix of news and
reviews along with features on US maker
Wm Hocker, Lineol and Elastolin, a Zulu
chief and the Shan Elephants of Burma!

Regal
Regal of New Zealand have
recently added to its Captain
Cook range for Te Papa – The
Museum of New Zealand.
The new piece is a 4-pounder
cannon from HMB Endeav-
our, an original of which can
be seen at Te Papa, one of six
jettisoned on June 11, 1770
when the Endeavour ran

Reef, Queensland. All six guns
were recovered in 1969 and
one each gifted to the UK, USA and New Zealand with the other
three remaining in Australia. The new cannon, like the rest of
the Cook range, is available exclusively from Te Papa.

US based TCS has added to its ranks of GI’s for the Vietnam con-
flict this issue with 14 new ‘Ground Pounder’ figures. There are
actually a total of seven new poses but each is either painted as
a Caucasian or African American, an unusual thing to do given
that most other companies sculpt these two races as individual
figures given there are, certainly in the real world, so obvious
differences in look. Priced though at $38.90 a figure, or $539 for
all 14, they do offer good value for money especially if you want
to ‘bulk out’ your Vietnam display.

Tradition
Gordon C. Neilson
It is with much sadness that I report the pass-
ing of Gordon C. Neilson on February 19, 2020.
Gordon was the younger brother of Andy
Neilson (co-founder of King & Country) and
was best known for his stunning dioramas
which he created for toy soldier collectors
around the world, and which were sold via
K&C. I knew Gordon personally and fondly remember sitting
with him in a bar in Hong Kong only a few years ago chatting all
things “toy soldier”.
Gordon will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him,
both inside and outside of the hobby, as he was a very kind and
generous individual. He is survived by his wife Sue, son William
and granddaughter Gabriella.

TOY SOLDIER COLLECTOR
Tradition of London recently sent me details of their ‘Toy Sol-
dier Set 831’ The Belgian Army at the Second Battle of Ypres'. This
set is available either painted at £105.95 or as individual castings
at £10.95 each. These are very traditional (no pun intended) toy
soldiers which have a lovely toy-like charm about them whilst
still having enough detail to keep most armchair historians
happy. These and the other multitude of Tradition figures are
worth checking out if you’re new to the hobby or just haven’t
visited their website in a while.
Xuna Hua Miniature
Xuna is a new Chinese-based company which plans to manu-
facture figures depicting Chinese history. Thus far, we’ve only
received one email from the company with the details of its first
release of a mounted Chinese warrior. Suffice to say, the figure's
quality looks extremely good and the limited information I’ve
managed to glean from the email is that the figures are being
sculpted in Russia but produced in China. Priced at $179.95, the
figure is not cheap but then quality does look good and I know
the company is pitching itself against the ‘big boys’ but focusing
specifically on Chinese history to start with, and given there is
a growing collector base in China (proven by us sending more
copies of TSC over there than ever!), then I believe they may
be opening a new niche market within the hobby. Certainly, a
company I’ll be keen to hear from as its ranges grow.

Petite Guerre Toy Soldiers
PGTS has some interesting new French
regular infantry and Cimarrons, runa-
way slaves from the West Indies and
the Southern Colonies masters. https://

They are plastic and the Light Infantry
are not Barzso reissues. The plastic
Militia and Grenadiers were originally
made by Barzso in boxed sets. Barzso
had the sculpts made for the other four
sets but did not have moulds made. LOD
had the moulds made and manufac-
tured the plastic figures in the last four
AWI sets that were part of the Barzso
Yorktown playlet. LOD now also owns

EF have announced a price increase
on all products with effect from Febru-
ary 1, 2020. “It is our policy to keep our
price level steady for at least 18 months
and to moderate our price increase
at around 5% or so each time. Our last
price increase was on August 1, 2017. The
original plan was to do the price increase
in February 2019, but Brexit and the
Trade War have caused much instability
to the economy and currency exchange
rates. Among other factors, employees
need to keep pace with the rising cost of
