were complete before the Second World War started in
1939, but when the French were defeated in the Battle of France in 1940, both
ships now ready, ed to the relative safety of French colonies in Africa,
Richelieu
to Dakar and
Jean Bart
to Casablanca.

at Arsenal de Brest, France.
Launched on 17 January.
Commissioned on 1 April.
Richelieu
was damaged
during Operation Catapult
(a British naval attack
on French Navy ships at
the naval base at Mers El
Kébir), and at the Battle of
Dakar (an Allied attempt to
capture the port of Dakar
in French West Africa).

After repairs,
Richelieu
was turned over to Free French
control after the Allied invasion of North Africa.
She served with the British Home Fleet before being
deployed to the Eastern Fleet in the battle against the
Japanese.
Richelieu
was at the Battle of Malacca, but not close
enough to engage the Japanese ships.
Also in the same year,
Richelieu
was part of the force
which liberated Singapore following the Japanese
surrender in the September.
