BEFORE YOU START PROGRAMMING
1.
All the programs in this book
were written, initially,
for
the Spec-
trum. However, they can
also
be
made to work
with
a
BBC,
Electron
or Commodo
re
64.
If
using one of the latter,
you
will
have to replace
some of
the lines in
the programs with new
ones:

If
you
are NOT using
a
Spec-
trum, leave out
any
line with the
symbo
l. in front
of
it. When you
ha ve finished
typing in the main
listing, type in all the variation
lines
g
iven
for your machine. Your
computer will insert them in the
right
order.
3.
The program
li
stings sometimes
refer
to subroutines
(with
the in-
struction
COSUB) numbered 1000,
2000,3000
and
so on. All these are
found on
page
32. Add
a
ll
the sub-
routines that are
called
in the main
listing
onto the end
of
each pro-
gram
when
you
have typed it in.

All
the listings
sho
uld
be typed
into your
computer in
cap
ita l letters
(CAPS)
.
When
you
run
a
program,
also
be sure
to put your
compu
ter
into
CAPS mode.
Otherwise,
some
of
the programs
will not
work.

When
a
program
comes
to
th
e
end
a 'stop
message' usually
ap-
pears
on screen.
After a program
has halted,
or
if
it
cras
hes
for
some
reason
as you are
runnlJ1g It,
you
can re-start by typing
and entering
RUN
(unless
otherwise instructed).
6. There
are
many
ways
to change
FOR
SPECTRUM
or improve the programs in
thi
s
book. The
obvious
place is with
new screen messages,
or
with other
colours or by
changing
the speed
of
play.

Spectrum
users
are
reminded
that the keywords FN and
DEF
FN
a re entered in E mode. To en ter the
instruction FNR(6), for example,
first obtain FN, then type R

normally. To get DEF FNR(N),
enter DEF FN
