Editorial, I did a piece
on my holiday habit of
inding local model shops to
explore. I must have struck a
chord as I have never had so many
letters about an editorial so I
thought I would share one with
you in the hope it might inspire a
few other readers to write in with
their experiences of local hobby
shops both home and abroad.

No doubt most of you are familiar with Tenerife where the more well off
like to spend the winter months and many people go on holiday for a week
or two. At the end of November 2018, I went there with part of my family
to enjoy the sunshine, clean air, beautiful nature and the general atmos-
phere. We are not beach people but try and do excursions to discover beau-
tiful places, views and nice restaurants away from the tourist traps. One
day we went to San Cristóbal de la Laguna. A rather important city that,
as opposed to what its name would imply is not situated at the coast. There
is a pleasant historical centre with shops, pubs and cosy little restaurants.
Suddenly I found myself in front of a shop window abundant with models
and modelling stuff. I let the rest of the company continue their aimless
strolling around and stepped through the open door.
After meeting the friendly owner, José Pablo Alvarez, we naturally
started talking about models, kits. He really is a genuine modelling shop-
keeper, an expert with ample knowledge of the history and evolution of
the hobby while at the same time possessing an enormous love for his job.
Like many he worries about the future of our hobby but at the same time
he tries to do something about it. Customers get advice and explanations
fed by his enormous know-how and experience. That is exactly what a
good shopkeeper is supposed to do, E-shops and store chains cannot pos-
sibly provide this service.
Pablo goes a lot further. There is a table in the shop where anyone
interested can try their hand at modelling under his supervision and guid-
ance. When I was there two young teenagers were hard at work - is this the
way to encourage them into the hobby?
It then transpired that the Canary Islands have their own IPMS branch,
independent from Spain. This means that there is a very healthy hard core
of modellers. Some have an international reputation like master modeller
Rodrigo Navarro. They have a weekly workshop that sometimes seems to
go a bit beyond modelling or demos. Just Google “IPMS Canary Islands
Weekly Meeting” and “Teide Hobby”.
So, my dear colleagues, in case you consider spending a holiday in
Tenerife include a trip to La Laguna in your planning. Pablo will no
doubt give you a hearty welcome. A word of warning though, plan your
visit carefully because between 13.00 and 17.00 it is Siesta. All shops are
closed and you will be very lonely until they reopen.
