I
t finally hit me as I stumbled on the dancing platform, nearly dropping to
my knees and spinning slightly as my hand wrapped tightly around the
stripper pole. My eyes darted out quickly to gauge the reactions of the crowd
surrounding me. A few men turned to notice me trembling, though their
bodies still swayed and gyrated to the music, making no move to come help
me up as my cheeks flushed bright red under the purple strobe lights of the
nightclub.
I sighed, realizing no one else had seen or heard me drop suddenly, and rose
back to my feet. It’s not like it would matter; as long as Maddox didn’t see me
fumble, then I was in the clear, ready to resume my dancing.
Except he noticed. As my eyes flicked to the stage, where the DJ was flailing
his arms over the soundboard, I saw Maddox’s dark, pinpoint eyes had
already locked onto me, his brows creased, and his arms crossed as his gaze
bored into me. A wave of nausea rolled over me as his eyes connected with
mine, which caused me to turn away and awkwardly begin to dance again;
that wasn’t a look I ever wanted to receive. His eyes were dark and cruelly
shaped, and in that darkness, I saw my punishment for slipping up, even for a
momentary lapse in thinking. Any moment now he’d stride over, forearms
bulging with those massive muscles of his, strained desperately to pull me
down and drag me off to the back rooms. It’s not like anyone would notice if
he took me away anyway…
As my body fell back into the rhythm I was used to, I began to let my mind
think again. Men and women both hooted and hollered the faster I danced,
their attention slowly pulled in my direction. I swung, I flew, I did what
Maddox expected of me, and nothing less. With the strobe lights above, it
almost looked like I popped from one side to the other. A few men jumped
forward to drop dollars on the floor in front of me, winked and shouted over
the music for me to get something nice, as if a few dollars could have gotten
me anything I desired.
Could those dollars have bought a taxi for me to climb in off shift and take off
to the other side of the country? Like hell they would have.
That’s when the thought hit me again, though I remained on my feet that time.
