any of us, of a certain age will have spent some time
of their early, misspent youth adorning the perimeter
fence of the local airfield to satisfy their fascination
with aeroplanes. Your editor was one of them!
My ‘local’ was RAF Bovingdon where the visiting
‘fare’ was gratifyingly cosmopolitan. Of those I can still remember,
notably rare one-offs included Republic F-84 Thunderjets, Lockheed
P2V-3 and P2V-5 Neptunes, A ‘Kings Flight’ (Her Majesty had yet to
accede) Vickers Viking, Lockheed T-33, Avro Yorks and Douglas C-
54s (the Americans shared the airfield with the RAF).
And then there were the de Havilland Vampires and Gloster
Meteors. Although not possible to actually see them start up on the
parking apron, one always know knew when a ‘Vamp’ was about to
go flying by the unique sound of its DH Goblin engine, in complete
contrast to that of the Gloster Meteor T.Mk.7s and F.Mk.8s, their R-R
Derwents emitting their equally distinctive low moan as the
‘Meatboxes’ ambled round the peri-track to the main runway
threshold immediately opposite our vantage point. It provided
fascinated youth with a satisfying whiff of burned Kerosene, before
thundering off for the ride down most of the tarmac ahead of them.
The highest drama was when a Meteor FR.9 ‘arrived’ from the
other end of the runway, touched down far too late and went
through ‘our’ fence, across the road and into the cabbage field the
other side. ‘Prune’ arising from the cockpit looked a mixture of
embarrassment and ‘peed-off’ which the fire wagon arrived.
The Gloster Meteor was ‘the’ RAF jet fighter of the mid 1940s, well
into the next decade, becoming a straight winged fighter in a
swept-wing world and the early marks, particularly the Mks 3 and 4,
have a graceful sleekness of shape that was lost with the Mk.8 and
with the Night fighter NF.11 and 14.
Present day advances in lectric ducted fan power have made
scale jet modeling practical for the ‘everyday’ scale modeller and
straight winged jets have a real appeal. Some that come to mind, in
addition to those already mentioned here include the Lockheed F-
80 Shooting Star, McDonnell Banshee, Grumman F9F Panther, Hawker
Sea Hawk and Supermarine Attacker, so if the Meteor presented as
this month’s major construction feature is not on your electric
ducted fan must-build list, then there’s plenty of others to choose
from.
In praise of Gloster’s trailblazer though, it has to be said that the
early Mks, 3 and 4 had a real elegabce about them. Try it!
