ovember 2019 issue of
FSM marks our 240th
edition, that’s 20
years of the magazine!
And yet, during that
whole time, we’ve never
‘majored’ in that most endearing
of ubiquitous private light
aircraft, the Piper J-3 Cub.
True, back in our August 2014
issue, we dealt with the cut-
down ‘Clipped Wing Cub’, the
supposedly semi-aerobatic
modern derivative that long
post-dates the closure of Piper’s
original production line. But
we’ve never given the bog-
standard 35ft 3”wing J-3 the full
treatment that this universally
popular aircraft deserves; until
now that is, with our
presentation of Phillip Kent’s
design, which gets the full
treatment this month with a
construction feature and plans in
both 1/6th and 1/5th scales.
It’s all supported by detailed
scale three-views, an extensive
close-up photo study and the
story of the Cub’s journey
beginning in 1928, that eventually
led to the J-3.
Every scale modeller should
have, or has had, a Piper J-3 at
some time in their modelling life
... mine’s an 81” wingspan
Hangar 9 ARTF (can’t understand
why it short-changes on full
1/5th scale), veteran.
But it’s still reasonably
respectable, hangs in my ‘toy
room’ ... and of course, ITS’
YELLOW!
BEAR ESSENTIALS
In recent years, the Grumman
F8F Bearcat seems to have been
overlooked as a scale modelling
subject, which is something of a
surprise when one reflects on
the stunning performance of
The
Fighter Collection’s
resident
example that performs to
spectacularly each year at the
Flying Legends Air Show, at
Duxford.
Along with the Hawker Sea
Fury, the Bearcat represents the
pinnacle of piston engine fighter
performance and receives the
‘Subjects for Scale’
treatment in
this month’sissue.
