I
t’s interesting how ‘association’ jogs
memories – and in my own case, anything
to do with aviation regularly does – often
from my distant much earlier years.
Martin Hardy’s Lockheed Super
Constellation, our Master Models feature this
month, certainly did it for me.
In my Air Training Corps days, Friday night
was ‘Band Practice Night’ … bagpipes …
YES!!!
The ‘memory association’ prompted
by Martin’s spectacular model is that on
summer Friday evenings back in those
late 1950s years, it was possible to see the
unmistakable outline, low on the horizon, of
a ‘Super Connie’ clawing for altitude after
take-off from London Heathrow airport,
presumably on the overnight North Atlantic
run. What heightened the memory more
than anything else, was the throb of those
four Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone engines
that actually vibrated the windows of the
ATC hut!
It’s such details that prompt the
memories.
Yet another of Martin’s spectacular
electric powered multi-motor electric scale
models, prompted a further ‘memory’. His
latest is a model of the Italian Twin-pusher
Piaggio 136 amphibian.
What prompted the memory of that one,
was the example once operated by the
McAlpine construction and civil engineering
group in what was, then, my neck of the
woods. The noise of Those Lycoming GSO-
480 engines would announce its approach
way, way, before it ever came into sight. Size-
for-size, I think it was the most noisy aircraft
I’ve ever known!
EUREKA MOMENTS
I like to hope that what appears each
month in FSM, particularly the technique
pieces, provides some useful nugget of
lateral thinking that draws a
“why did I not
think of that”
reaction .
One such appears in Martin Hardy’s
Master Models feature in which he
describes his approach to planking
the fuselage skin of his Lockheed Super
Constellation. He applied the balsa sheets
with slow drying PVA white glue around
the formers, but interspersed that with short
runs of cyano, so that the cyano quickly
‘grabbed’ the formers, sufficient to hold the
skin in place while the slow white glue set –
saving a lot of time in the process.
Nice one Martin!
