A
s I write this piece, the
Monday morning task,
(always the last, before we
go to press each month),
this year’s Old Warden Scale
Weekend just ended.
Sunday’s (July 25th) ‘Gorillas in the Mist’
visibility there for much of the morning
prompted a drift around the Shuttleworth
Museum’s hangars, which brought me
to the aeroplane that is one of our major
features this month – the Museum’s Bristol
M.1C.
Yes, it’s a replica and the only original is
in Australia, but the sight of its sleek shape
raised the question in my mind that has
been nagging throughout our September
issue production period. Just how could
the ‘Neddies’ in charge of military aircraft
procurement back then, have been so
prejudiced against the monoplane, as to
deny the RFC’s front-line Squadrons an
aircraft that could run the pants off any
biplane fighter? Pure ill-informed bias?
It was ordered, in penny numbers
eventually, but not before an opportunity
has been lost.
The Bristol M.1 is a truly attractive
subject for scale modelling and is our full
size free plan construction feature this
month
and regularly flew at Nationals scale
event level. Though exhibiting years of
dilapidation, the Avenger is still complete.
The fascinating thing about the picture
that John sent along and which is shown
here, is that, if you ignor the workshop
background clutter, the model, in its
present state, looks so like the kind of
picture seen in the likes of Aeroplane
Monthly magazine’s news feature
announcing the restoration or discovery
of some historic aircraft type.
Just like those full size gems, John is
planning a full restoration of his Grumman
TBF and has promised to produce a
feature revealing the techniques he used
… although, that might take some time
yet.
SACK CLOTH AND ASHES TIME
Shortly after last month’s FSM went on
sale, Neville Mines in New Zealand was
quick off the mark to correct some errors
in our feature on Mike Roach’s DH 86
‘Express’, built from the Ivan Pettigrew
plan. Ivan is in fact a British New Zealander
and his prototype model of DH 86 ZK-AEF
as seen on page 11, is finished in the
colours of NZ Union Airways, not Qantas.
Heartening to know that our readers
take it all in though!
RE-ACQUIRE AND RENOVATE
It’s surprising just how many scale models
get passed around into new ownership
sometimes moe that once, even. Reasons
are many; space and storage problems
are often the cause as modellers move
on to new projects – bigger and better
perhaps. Others may be moving on to
other interests.
Perhaps the least likely side of this is
the re-acquisition by an original builder/
owner. An example of this is John
Carpenter, who recently took back
possession of the Grumman TBF Avenger
that he built quite a few years back
