BUILDS THE 1:72 HASEGAWA KIT
Nicknamed the ‘Widowmaker’ based on its early pilot-killer
reputation, the plane’s beginnings were difficult. Produced in
series the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the B-26 was a
very modern design for its time (tricycle undercarriage, and in
particular the first use of an electric turret). With fairly strict
specifications, the weight of the aircraft generated a fairly high
wing loading which continued to increase thereafter, which made
the aircraft very demanding to fly. As series production was
launched without a prototype testing stage, many teething
troubles appeared, but were corrected as they went on directly on
the production lines (this did not stop until in 1945, despite 4
official investigations carried out against the aircraft).
Pressed into service very quickly, the aircraft won the approval of
the crews. The situation was quite different in the USA where fatal
accidents were frequent in training. A demanding but very safe
and efficient aircraft in the hands of an experienced pilot, the
situation was completely different in the hands of a trainee pilot.
Numerous technical modifications were made to the aircraft,
mainly by increasing the span of the wings, but were ineffective. It
was not until the F version which improved flight handling at low
speed thanks to the increased wing angle setting. Everything was
been reorganized, from the training of mechanics and pilots to the
procedures for using the aircraft to make it safer and more
efficient. So much so, that it became a successful bomber with
