This book is
primarily
interested in
introducing
its readers
to
the whole
genre
of
Jewish and Christian
apocalyptic
literature
and then
offering pnnciples
for discover-
ing
the
meaning
of and
appropriating
the message
of
these
ancient texts

modern
context.
It
is
to
a
degree
written
as
a
response
to
fundamentahstlhterali~t
mterpreta-
tions
of Daniel
and Revelation
which it criticizes
at
length
in
one
chapter.
Russell
emphasizes
the need
to
see
apocalyptic
writings
within their
literary
and historical
context
before
one
begins
the
interpretation
process.
It would
serve
well
as a
popular
introduction
to
apocalyptic
literature
for
the
religious
Bible
reader.

Watson
asserts
as
his
primary
thesis
the
increasingly
familiar.
but
no
less
contro-
versial,
claim that
’[B]Iblical
interpretation
should
concern
itself
primarily
with thc
theological
issues
raised
by
the
biblical
texts...’ In order
to
uphold
this
thesis.
Watson enlists
the aid
of
several
newer
hermeneutical methods such
as
literary
criti-
cism,
canonical
criticism,
and
feminist
theology.
Text.
Church
and World
is
divided
into four
primary
sections.
Part
One
emphasizes
the biblical
text’s
final form
aa
foundational
for
constructing
a
theological
hermeneutic. Parts Two and Three draw
upon
insights gained
from both
poststructurahst theory
and feminist
theology
respect-
tively,
in
order
to
develop
components
of
an
exegetical
method onented
specifically
towards
theological
issues. Part Four
develops
a
systematic theological
hermeneutic
that
acts
as a
framework
for
exegesis.
One
highlight
of this work
can
be found
m
the
engaging
exegetical
examples
pre-
sented
by
Watson. This is
especially
true
where,
using
Genesis
37,
he
contrasts
traditional
source
criticism
and
final
form
criticism,
thus
providing
some
interesting
results.
By
way of
criticism,
there
are numerous
typographical
errors
that detract
from
the
book’s overall
presentation.
With
the
publication
of
Texr,
Church
ancl
World,
Watson
joins
an
increasing
number
of biblical scholars
who,
due
to
deficiencies
emerging
from
historical
criticism,
have
turned
to
the
newer
hermeneuti-
cal methods
hoping
to
find
a
methodological
balance.
And
although
Watson ia sym-
pathetic
to
aspects
of these
newer
methods,
he
remains
cautiously
critical of their
shortcomings.
Thus,
he has
provided
a
well-balanced and
insightful
work that
gives
precedence
to
theological
concerns.
