Aircraft that
changed the World
A
mazingly, there are people still alive today who were born
before the Wright brothers first staggered into the air. The
complete history of powered flight encapsulated into a
single lifetime. Over its short existence, aviation has transformed
the lives of every human being in one way or another. Aviation has
united the world and divided it. Travel between continents is now
measured in hours rather than days, bringing nations and cultures
closer together. Used as a weapon of war, within 30 years it had the
capability of launching Armageddon, but as a weapon of peace it
has also saved the lives of countless millions.
Whether as a vehicle for destruction, peace, commerce, travel,
pleasure or humanitarian causes, the aviation revolution has irrevocably
transformed the world we live in. But there are some aircraft that have
changed it more than others, and these are the subject of this volume.
As ever, any list is subjective and for every aircraft that is featured there
are many more that could have equal claim for inclusion. We have
selected an eclectic mix of machines, embracing all genres of flying,
from Blériot monoplane to Boeing 747, from Vickers Vimy to Boeing
B-52, from Sopwith Camel to MQ-1 Predator… and many more in
between. But of course, there is one aircraft that has had more impact
than them all. The one that launched the aviation revolution, the one
built by two brothers, the one that first took to the air over the remote
wind-swept dunes of Kitty Hawk, Carolina, back in 1903… the one that
was eponymously named the Wright Flyer. History records that from the
moment the Wright Flyer took to the air, the destiny of the world was
changed forever.
