VIETNAM WAR
T
he Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War,
was a conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia that started
65 years ago on 1 November 1955 and lasted until the fall of
Saigon on 30 April 1975. Officially fought between North Vietnam
and South Vietnam, the North was supported by the Soviet Union,
China, and other communist allies, while the South was supported
by anti-communist nations such as Australia, Thailand, South Korea
and, of course, the United States. US involvement escalated in the
early 1960s and erupted into a full-blown war after the Gulf of
Tonkin crisis in 1964. What happened next resulted in one of the
most controversial decades in US history.

US Army, USN and USMC Aircraft
Americans continue to grapple with the meaning and legacy of the
Vietnam War. Politics, protest, and patriotism are forever entwined in
any conversation about this 20th-century conflict. Literature, film, music,
and television have told many stories of the war in the jungles, often
against a soundtrack of clattering helicopter blades. Regarded as the first
helicopter war, Vietnam was the proving ground for a new generation
of machines that offered unprecedented support to the troops on the
ground. In particular, the US Army ‘bloodied’ the Cobra gunship, the
mighty Chinook heavy lifter and,of course, the ubiquitous Huey, the sight
and sound of the Vietnam War.
Meanwhile, the might of the US Navy was cruising menacingly
offshore. Flight deck operations on an aircraft carrier have been
described as a ballet of chaos. It is an apt description for one of the most
dangerous jobs in the world… and US Navy operations off the coast of
Vietnam did not prove an exception. US Navy fighters and attack aircraft
provided a powerful presence during the Vietnam war, ranging from the
‘last of the props’ Skyraider to the ‘new kid on the deck’ F-4 Phantom.
By contrast, ‘Leathernecks’ love getting their feet dirty and while the
US Marine Corps attack aircraft were carrier capable, most of them were
land-based in Vietnam, sometimes literally hundreds of yards from the
heat of the battle. Its helicopters, too, were often the saviours of the
grunts on the ground.
All three services played a vital part in the air war over Vietnam, but a
heavy price was paid, one that its veterans will never forget.

This 53rd issue of ‘Aviation Archive’, completes our coverage celebrating
the 65th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War, a conflict that
shaped modern aerial warfare. We have listed the most significant
aircraft flown by the US Army, US Navy and US Marine Corps in the
battle, examining their part in the conflict. The types are listed under
