Tremble, fearful mortals, for the
midnight hour chimes.
Ancient battlefields echo to the clatter of
bleached bones and rusted armour as the dead
rise once more. Plague pits and shallow graves
heave as maggot-eaten fingers tear aside the
loose topsoil. The baying of lifeless wolves chills
mortal souls to the core. Chiropteran horrors
spill from tumbledown belfries as a shrieking
cloud, bloated from a diet of fresh gore.
Yet all these fiends pale in comparison to the
masters of the revenant host: the Soulblight
vampires. These deathless warlords bear both
the mightiest of powers and the most dreadful
of curses. By their will can the necromantic arts
be harnessed to bring hordes of undead warriors
lurching to their feet. With a single blow can
they tear through armour, flesh and bone to rip
out the vital organs beneath. But to maintain
their monstrous existence, a vampire must slake
an endless thirst for the blood of the living. The
beast within is demanding indeed, and behind
the porcelain facade of humanity, vampires are
ravenous horrors who would plunge the realms
into an endless, abominable night.
The Soulblight vampires consider themselves
destined to rule. In this, they reflect he whose
malignant power sired them: Nagash, Supreme
Lord of the Undead. From bleak Nagashizzar,
he commands his Gravelords to march forth,
bringing the curse of undeath to every corner
of the realms. In the darkness of his necrotopia
shall the vampires feast as never before, mortals
reduced to cowering slaves fit only to be drained
of blood. So it is that the Soulblight aristocracy
makes war on the living with a relentless
fervour, their corpse-hosts reinforced with the
bodies of those same bold warriors who once
defied them.
So be afraid, mortals, and clutch thy blessed
trinkets close, for night draws in – and the
Soulblight Gravelords come for thee.

ARISTOCRACY
Beneath the pallid yet strangely beguiling appearance of a Soulblight vampire lies an inhuman terror that forever
lusts after the taste of blood. Impossibly strong and preternaturally skilled in necromantic sorceries, they lead
their resurrected legions against the living, fighting a relentless war in service to their monstrous hunger.
To face the armies raised by the
Soulblight Gravelords is to battle
against inevitability itself. No
other force in the Mortal Realms
illustrates the fate that awaits all
life so starkly as these hosts of the
risen dead. Hollow eye sockets aglow
with baleflame, their warriors lurch
across the battlefield in a grisly danse
macabre, a mass of rotting flesh and
clattering bones that swamps the
enemy. No mortal, regardless of how
courageous they may be, can deny
the icy spear of terror that spikes
into their gut as their cadaverous
foes close in.
Sickness does not blight these
corpse-armies; fatigue does not
weigh at their limbs. They feel
neither cold nor pain nor fear, for
the vestigial flickers of awareness
granted unto them extend only to
the impetus to kill. At the will of
their masters, they throw themselves
against the shields and fortresses
behind which the living cower,
grinding them down through tireless
attrition before turning rusted blades
infused with potent ending-magics
upon their foes.
Perhaps, a cunning soul may
reckon, one could destroy those
selfsame masters, ending the horror
of the undead by disrupting the
magic that animates them – but
such is far easier said than done.
These are the eponymous Soulblight
Gravelords, a brood of vampiric
warlords who have entered into the
annals of infamy across the Mortal
Realms. The curse that has claimed
these unhallowed beings grants
them strength, speed and resilience
beyond the ken of any mortal; a
vampire can burst from stillness to
animation swifter than a man can
blink, slaughtering a band of Chaos
Warriors or mob of hulking orruks
with nothing but their claws and
sharpened fangs.
Yet physical power is not the only
boon offered to the vampires; indeed,
many possess an unearthly charm.
The true nobles of undeath, these are
no hissing ghouls or wailing wraiths,
though their cold beauty and dark
charisma is all too often a veneer
beneath which their monstrous true
nature lurks. They are immortal,
and even on the rare occasion
that one is ‘slain’, they are nigh on
impossible to truly destroy – and
they will inevitably return to wreak
their vengeance. The sinister beasts
of the night are theirs to command
and are capable of spreading the
curse to those whom they deem
worthy, propagating the terror of the
vampires until it has sunk deep into
lands and empires far and wide.
But it is not only ancient corpses
that are susceptible to necromancy:
the bodies of those slain battling
the dead are soon added to their
morbid armies, falling upon their
former comrades with a slack-jawed
and mindless ferocity. This is the
true horror of the Gravelords, and
one in which many vampires find
cruel amusement, for if it is dreadful
enough to face the armies of lost
ages, how harrowing must it be
to battle against the puppeteered
corpses of those who were allies and
loved ones mere hours before?
Though proud Soulblight vampires
typically wield their armies with
the same disdain an unsentimental
carpenter does their tools, there is
an undeniable morbid majesty to
these resurrected hosts. Ranks of
skeletal warriors stand to attention,
rusted spears held high and banners
snapping in an ethereal wind.
Wights clad in verdigrised armour
or mounted atop unliving destriers
charge alongside sneering vampiric
cavaliers, their horns sounding out
an unearthly dirge. Packs of undead
wolves prowl at the army’s flanks,
hunting for stragglers, while flights
of bats ranging in size from smaller
than a man’s fist to bigger than a
warhorse circle and shriek through
the midnight skies above.
It is the vampires themselves who
ought to be feared the most, however.
Whether fighting on foot or from
astride hulking corpse-behemoths,
they are capable of cleaving through
scores of lesser warriors with
contemptuous ease, directing the
advance of the undead through will
alone. Even in the midst of battle,
they will take the time to feed on
their enemies, draining their blood
in vitae-drenched slaughtering
sprees. In doing so, they acknowledge
– if only for the briefest of moments –
the cursed monster that lurks within
Most terrible of all, many Soulblight
vampires are potent reservoirs
of necromantic energy and are
capable of harnessing this power for
sinister purposes. The battlefields
of the realms have been fought over
countless times across the bloody
centuries, and beneath the surface
lie shallow graves and corpse pits
containing the remains of warriors
who met a violent end. With the
aid of their necromantic acolytes, a
vampire can resurrect such legions
on a grand scale, calling them forth
from these gravesites to do battle.
Yellowed bones and rotten flesh are
infused with hellish vigour as the
dead rise, clawing aside the topsoil at
their master’s compulsion.
