This book is dedicated to, and in loving memory of, my wife,
Jackie – her encouragement and support of my life-long interest
and passion for railways meant I was able to devote a great deal
of time to this venture.
Also to my late father, Derek, who passed on to me his life-time
devotion to all things railway and who enabled me to fulfil my
photographic ambitions from a relatively early age.
Not forgetting my mother, Margaret, who managed to survive
and prosper in a railway-mad family.

The loco was rebuilt in 1918 from an earlier 2-2-0T built in 1906
by Drummond, so it wasn’t as ancient as it looked! It was resident
shunter at the Redbridge Sleeper Works for many years but when
classmates 30588 and 30589 were withdrawn in 1957 (December
and June respectively) and replaced by diesel power in the docks
(Drewry 204bhp 0-6-0DM No. 11223), clearance problems were
immediately apparent. So 77s was borrowed from Redbridge and
worked on the dock intermittently for lengthy periods between
December 1957 and 10 February 1959.
Drewry No. 11224, which had cutback footsteps to aid clearances,
became available from 12 January 1959, but a manning dispute
meant 77s doing the honours for a short while once more. It was
withdrawn from service on 21 March 1959 and scrapped at Eastleigh
Works on 2 May 1959. Photo taken by my father, Derek Plumb,
