peed has always enthralled people,
be it in cars, boats, aircra or
trains, but in practical terms it is
simply a means of getting somewhere
faster. Much of the UK’s Victorian railway
infrastructure doesn’t particularly lend
itself to speed much above 100mph,
particularly in urban areas, but Brunel’s
Great Western Main Line to Bristol
Parkway and a good proportion of the
East Coast Main Line certainly do.
Elsewhere innovation was needed to raise
speeds, with rst the Advanced Passenger
Train and then the Pendolino bringing
tilting trains to the West Coast Main
Line, a route rife with curves and speed
restrictions. High speed running is nost
bene cial over long distances, as it can
signi cantly reduce overall journey times,
but on short journeys the gains are only
the odd minute.
Britain’s rail passengers have
experienced huge leaps forward in
technology since the HST was introduced
in 1976, and while the top speed on the
national network is still 125mph, getting
up to it is now much quicker thanks
to the Pendolino and Hitachi’s new
InterCity Express Trains. Of course there
is also HS1, the UK’s rst truly ultra-high
speed line with a top speed of 186mph
(300km/h). In 2026 it is due to be joined
by Phase 1 of HS2, connecting initially
London and Birmingham, and later
Phase 2, adding Leeds and Manchester
and the ability to continue to Northern
England and Scotland on existing tracks.
