SMALL CAN BE BEAUTIFUL
hen I showed off photos of
the
Garden Rail
layout at the
National Garden Railway Show,
a friend commented that the three-metre
square area the model filled wasn’t that much
smaller than the space most people could
hope to devote to their layout in a modern,
compact (in estate agent speak, meaning
tiny), back garden.
Now, there’s no reason why anyone with
limited room should be denied the pleasures
of large-scale railway modelling, it’s just a case
of making the best use of the space available.

To help, in this issue, we bring you five
different, small layouts as inspiration. Each
has its own special features, and every one
pleases their builder – surely the point of any
model railway?
Don’t worry, the magazine isn’t going all
miniature – we have much larger layouts
lined up for future issues, but hope that this
diversion down the minor lines shows how
accessible our hobby can be. The message is,
don’t just dream about building a railway –
get on with it. You really do have the space...
Your editor was too busy to spend much money
at the NGRS, purchases being limited to some
brushes and a model boat (yes, really). However,
his dad was waving the credit card and a Saxa
Salt wagon from Timpdon models has emerged
from my workbench.
The laser-cut kit is a simple build,
assembling into an attractive wagon.
A single-piece vinyl transfer on a
backing sheet the same size as the
wagon side makes the signwriting of the
iconic text really easy.
