o summarize the history of the Israeli Armed Forces in a few pages,
from its birth in 1948 up to the present time is a difficult task, even with
the scope limited to land warfare as with this title. Therefore, we will
focus on the aspects that are most interesting for AFV modelers as opposed to
the historical and technical aspects. The photos featured in this book will be
primarily focused on modern subjects.
All Hebrew names have been Latinized and translated into English in order to
make them intelligible for you the reader. Furthermore, the names assigned to
weapons, vehicles, and equipment are not always official and they could refer
to only one of the many versions or variants of the subject.
A nation at war
The State of Israel was born on May 14th of 1948, on self-proclamation upon the
expiration of the British Mandate of Palestine. The next day the United Nations
sanctioned its birth and the troops of the United Kingdom completed their withdrawal
from Palestine.
The Arab countries had always opposed the formation of a Jewish State and as expected,
attacked Israel with the May 15
th
invasion. From that moment forward, the military
operations continued without pause: the conflict of 1948 and 1949 (First Arab-Israeli
War, War of Independence for the Israelis); between 1951 and 1956 the defensive
operations along the borders; in 1956 the Sinai War (or the Second Arab-Israeli War,
simultaneously with the British-French attack on the Suez Canal); between 1964 and
1967 the War over Water (for the control of the heights through which the river Jordan
passes); in 1967 the Six-Day War (Third Arab-Israeli War, a real “lightning war”, with
the Israeli conquest of large territories including the city of Jerusalem); in 1968 the
Israel was not the only nation in the region to field heavily modified armored vehicles,

battle of Karameh (an operation inside Jordan in response to Palestinian attacks);
the War of Attrition until 1970 (characterized by some raids within Egyptian territory);
in 1973 the Operation Spring of Youth, followed by the Yom Kippur War (Fourth Arab-
Israeli War: the surprise attack of Egypt and Syria overcame Israeli defenses, but they
soon were able to regain lost territories and capture new ground while suffering heavy
losses); in 1976 the Operation Entebbe (staged in Uganda to free passengers and crew
of a hijacked aircraft); in 1978 the Operation Litani (the invasion of southern Lebanon);
in 1982 the First Lebanon War (started with the Operation Peace for Galilee), which
continued until 2000 with continuous fighting along the border; between 1987 and
1993 the First Intifada (the internal revolt of the Palestinians); in 1996 the Operation
Grapes of Wrath in Lebanon; between 2000 and 2005 the Second Intifada; in 2002
the Operation Defensive Shield, the attack on Palestinian cities; in 2006 the Second
Lebanon War; in 2008 and 2009 the Operation Cast Lead against the Palestinians
in the Gaza Strip; in 2012 the Operation Pillar of Defense and in 2014 the Operation
Protective Edge, once more against the Palestinians.

On May 31st of 1948, Defense Minister and Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion decreed
the formation of the Israel Defense Forces, joining the paramilitary groups Haganah,
Palmach (the elite force of Haganah), Lehi, and Irgun (or Etzel) to the thousands of
soldiers who had fought along with the Anglo-Americans in the Second World War.
During the last months of the war, many flocked to Palestine, sometimes clandestinely.
Later, men and women of all ages were incorporated and quickly trained so as to
complete the staffing of the military units and prepare the new state for war.
