The paper used in this magazine is made from timber

Looking into the Past
I
suppose like many, I get
fascinated by documentaries
on TV about aspects of World
War II. Recently, I watched a
couple of such programmes, the first being
‘Drain the Oceans – Secrets of D-Day’, where
using the latest sonar technology, and
cutting-edge 3D modelling an expedition
was mounted to map sunken Allied vessels
off the Normandy Coast revealing some
stunning images from beneath the waves.
There were over 100 sunken vessels from
warships to landing craft exposed, plus
tanks and other vehicles that never made it
to the shorelines. Whilst an engrossing and
entertaining program, it also showed the
huge cost in terms of men and materials
that were lost in order for us the enjoy the
freedoms we take for granted. The second
program was ‘Expedition Bismark’, not a new
program, but one I had previously missed,
where director James Cameron and a crew
of historians embarked on a trip to
the wreck site of the Bismark in an
attempt to answer many unsolved
questions and search for the truth
behind what happened to the
ship. The film used revolutionary
production techniques and offered
high-definition shots of the Bismarck
wreckage under
the sea. It was a
rare and incredible
look into a deeply
significant piece of history,
and if you get the opportunity, I can highly
recommend a look at both shows! And the
latter leads me nicely into this month issue
of SMMI, as we have a part of the Bismark
reproduced in scale as Robert Stinchcombe
builds the 1:72 Takom ‘Bruno Turret’, one
the battleship’s forward gun housings.
Robert also brings another unusual build in
the shape of the 1:35 Panda Hobby HMEE-1
Engineer Excavator! Elsewhere this month,
Matt Edwards takes an in-depth look at the
recent 1:35 Airfix Cromwell Mk.IV, and Lee
Powell takes a look at the ‘Caesar II, Meng-
Models 1:35 Mk.A Whippet, as commanded
by Lieutenant Cecil Sewell VC. So, I hope
you enjoy what we have in store and all that
remains for me to says is, as always...
