A Question of Scale
W
hilst preparing this
month’s issue, I began to
muse about the scales we
feature in the magazine,
and whether they mirror what readers are
building. Obviously, 1:35 seems to be the
dominant scale for armour, and indeed most of
this month’s content is in that scale, however, I
am always keen to include builds in other scales.
There seems to be no shortage of models in
1:72 or 1:48, so is it perhaps that larger scales
offer more opportunity for adding details or is
it that there are more conversion and detailing
set available, or are they just are easier ‘on the
eye’, and I speak in terms of being able to see the
parts you are attaching! I know from personal
experience the trials and tribulations of trying
to fit small plastic or etched parts onto a 1:72 kit,
however, I do bow to the fact that my eyes are
not what they used to be! That said, a few years
ago modeller Tom Cole produced a book for us
called ‘Build and Convert Airfix Military Models’,
in which he created a superb series of
highly detailed models using 1:72 and
1:76 Airfix kits. He has since gone on to
write further books about modelling
in smaller scales featuring kits from
Revell as well as Airfix and others, along
with a number of conversion sets. Also,
there has been a rise in the popularity
of 1:48 kits, with
Tamiya investing in
new models in this
scale. I know that our IPMS
UK columnist John Tapsell
is a fan and advocate of this scale, and he often
shares insights into his builds in his monthly
missive. Likewise, for those who build figures,
1:35 again seems to be the ‘go to’ scale, especially
for dioramas, or for populating tank hatches or
armoured cars, and there are so many single
figure or multi-figure sets available to modeller,
as just a glance at our ‘Figure News’ section will
show. The popular scale for busts is 1:10, and
again there is plenty of choice from the likes of
Young Miniatures and Life Miniatures. Of late a
number of 1:16 scale full resin figures kits have
been released by such esteemed manufacturers
as Alpine Miniatures and Mitches Military Models
and in plastic by ICM and Master Box, which add
another dimension to this genre. So, whatever
scale you model in I hope that you continue to
enjoy your builds, and that you find
inspiration in SMMI. So, all that remains
for me to say is…..
