SCHOOL OF ARTS
Built in 1907, this was originally the
centre of cultural and adult educational
activity in Cairns. Now restored it
houses the Cairns Museum. Note the
nails still in the front post - this is where
funeral notices used to be posted.

SITE OF THE OLD CENTRAL
STATE SCHOOL
This was the site of one of Cairns'
original schools gazetted and opened in
1884. It closed in December 1994.
All that is left of the educational
institution are some of the large, old
mango trees.

PALACE THEATRE
The second theatre in Cairns to be called the
Palace, was designed by Harvey Draper in 1913.
The theatre first opened on 21 Dec 1914 &
was remodelled in 1924.

QANTAS BUILDING
Formerly Collins Chemist and built in 1923.
W.A. Collins was Mayor of Cairns during the
period 1927-37.

FORMER CAIRNS CITY COUNCIL
CHAMBERS AND PARK
This Inter-War Academic Classical style
building acted as the seat of local
government from 1930 to 1998.
It has been remodelled to incorporate
the new city library.

HIDES' CORNER
Built in 1930, Hides displays spacious
verandas, a truncated corner and unusual
sunhoods above its unprotected second
floor windows, all typifying a tropical
atmosphere and architectural style.

LANNOY HOUSE (MAZLINS)
This rendered brick building was erected
in 1927/28 for Octavius Lannoy.
The top floor was built as a cabaret and
housed the Trocadero Dance Hall popular
during World War II.

CLAUSON HOUSE
Restored by Mr. Clauson, a jeweller, it is
another example of traditional tropical
architecture with wide timber verandas and
decorative balustrade.

131 LAKE STREET
Erected in 1923-24, it was built by the Jack
Hunter family, residents of Thornborough.
The owners lived above the shop.

NIGHTCLUB
Alfred Taylor's plumbing works
occupied the site from 1890 until it was
remodelled in 1929 for an electrical
showroom. The building has been gutted
by fire on three occasions (in 1929,
1946, and 1984), and subsequently
rebuilt.

CAIRNS REGIONAL GALLERY
Formerly the Public Curator's offices and
the State Government Insurance Office.
Opened in1936 it features arched
window openings and Ionic columns
rising through both storeys. The building
was restored and became the home of
the Cairns Regional Gallery in 1995.

OLD COURT HOUSE
Construction of this low-set concrete building with a
simple classic facade was begun in 1919.
Now restored, it features wide timber verandas on
the rear and side elevations and a crest over
the entrance door. It replaced the original
Cairns Court House, which was opened
in 1884.

THE CAIRNS POST
This impressive Inter-War Academic Classical building
has undergone a few changes. The original building,
completed in 1908, had only the 3 northern bays and
extended to its present 8 bays in 1924.

KEEBLE'S BUILDING
Built in 1926 in a simple
classic style, with squat, square
capitalised pilasters and a frieze
ornamented by plaques. Keeble was
one of the early settlers. Starting as a
drover, he was later involved in plans for
a sugar mill at Freshwater and the
formation of the Cairns Harbour Board.

MARITIME HOUSE
Designed by Harvey Draper and
constructed in 1914 by Bell & McKenzie
for the Howard Smith Shipping Co.
The first floor was reached by a stairway
with a cedar-moulded hand-rail which
can still be seen from the entrance on
the left hand side of the building.

FORMER CAIRNS POST OFFICE
Erected in 1937 was Cairns fourth post
office and the third on this site (the first
in1886 and the second in 1907). It is
an Inter-War Classic Style. The building
has now been renovated and adapted
inside for business purposes.

OLD TELEGRAPH OFFICE
Reflects the architectural style of
the Post Office. Notice the similar detailing
around the main entrance. The telegraph,which
preceded the telephone system, came to Cairns
in 1879, linking North Queensland to the rest
of the world.

BOLANDS ON SPENCE
This building, now considerably altered, was
constructed in 1902 by Bulcock Bros. for
Michael Boland. It was one of the first concrete
buildings in the town.

THE BOLAND CENTRE
This ornate three-storey building was
erected in 1912-13 for Michael Boland,
an Irishman who from 1887 was a
trader in the Cairns and Tableland
district. This is largely in its original form
although changes have been made at
street level and internally.

EARL COURT
Formerly the National Bank of Australasia, this
building was constructed in 1926. It was
subsequently converted in the 1970s into small
shops. Earl Court still reflects the austere
architectural style popular among banking
institutions of its era.

CENTRAL HOTEL
The Central Hotel was constructed in
1909. The building incorporated the old
Bank of North Queensland building,
which was constructed in 1890.
The Central's exterior at the second level
is still in its original form, with wide
timber verandas & a decorative iron lace
balustrade.

QUAIDS REAL ESTATE
Formerly the Adelaide Steamship Co,
this unusual Spanish-Revival style
building was designed by architect
Harvey G. Draper and built by Wilson
and Baillie in 1910 at a cost of £2970.
Most of the building's exterior is still in
its original form although the ornate
plasterwork was added at a later date.
