THE FRAGILITY OF WORLD TRADE
T
he blocking of the Suez Canal
by the container ship Ever
Given during March resulted
in widespread coverage of
shipping and trade issues in the national
and international media, while social
media commentators speculated about
what happened to the ship and why.
One of the issues raised by the Canal’s
blockage was the sheer size of container
ships, and questions were asked
about whether such ships are too big.
However, as a considerable amount of
trade relies on ships being this large to
keep unit costs down, new boxboats are
generally only going to be getting larger.
Evergreen are in fact looking to build
even larger container ships.
But the blockage also highlighted how
fragile some of our supply chains are, and
that vessel sizes are not always matched
by the necessary infrastructure to deal
with the giant ships when something
happens. Bigger ships and the resultant
concentration of cargo has also created
the potential for ever larger losses, and
dealing with incidents involving large
ships, such as fires, groundings and
collisions, is complex and expensive.
Maybe the Ever Given stranding will be a
wake-up call for the container industry.
