Fresh Start
Spring is in the air! With it comes the urge to clear out cupboards, organise and set yourself up for
the year. Why? Honestly, I have no idea. It just happens. And once everything is neat, tidy and in
its place, you feel better. So, here’s an issue brimming with projects aimed at restoring order and
addressing clutter.
It’s also a joy to welcome new contributors to our pages. Talented Tanya Haines shows how silk
ribbons can become beautiful flowers on a clever necessaire to hold both your needles and scissors.
The queen of kantha, Angela Daymond showcases simple stitching to great effect on a handy mug
rug. It’s deliberately bigger than a coaster so there’s room for cake!
Brenda Sortwell’s richly detailed crewelwork takes you down to ground level with a design
that slowly makes its way through luscious undergrowth bursting into life. It’s a real treat and she
doesn’t stop there. Follow how she incorporates it into a pretty fabric box. Former Embroiderers’
Guild Graduate, Alex Vincent Turner transforms worn shirts and scrap yarn into a market bag with a
daffodil motif inspired by the Bacton Altar Cloth – itself a historic and upmarket piece of upcycling.
Colour is everywhere! The different shades and tones you choose can completely change the
impact of your stitching. Textile artists, Nikki Parmenter and Hellen Edwards encourage you to
explore and experiment within their projects. You could follow their instructions to the letter. Or play
with your palette and see what happens…
Or maybe take a moment to consider Vanessa Marr’s Women and Domesticity project. Since
2014, it has invited women from across the world to embroider their domestic experiences,
celebrations, and frustrations on a traditional yellow duster. It’s fair to say the burden of housework
and childcare often falls on women’s shoulders. Research has proved lockdown life merely increased
this load. As a response, Vanessa launched @domesticdusters on Instagram, and recently started
running duster-stitching workshops online. To join in all you need is a
domestic opinion you’d like to share through stitching.
For now, here’s the plan: ignore the dust and
thread your needle!
