irstly I am grateful to all the very many
readers who wrote in to ask if the
editorial mugshot could be changed for
something a little less grotesque. Always
happy to listen to feedback I am pleased to say
the horrible thing has been expunged from
the les. I had the Editor from Model Truck
World drop by my office to take a new one for
me and I was pleased with the result. ‘It has a
certain wisdom to it’, I pointed out.
‘Yes,’ he agreed. ‘Norman Wisdom…’ I can’t
imagine what he meant.
Fortunately we have far better things to look
at in this issue than a badly-built head. Chief
among them is Keith Peckover’s magni cent
Comet, a model I wish there were enough
hours in the day to build myself. Keith’s
account of the build is unvarnished, and
having built their Argosy I am aware that Mach
2 kits don’t simply fall together, but all these
skills we have amassed over the years should
enable us to rise to most challenges by now.
There is little chance of a mainstream kit of
this, or many other types that Monsieur Palix
has kitted over the years, and if Mr Tony Grand
can knock up an Avro 722 from an old drain
pipe and an Air x Vulcan (wait and see…),
then Mach 2’s kit, while not being a weekend
build, should not prove beyond us, and I for
one am grateful for its existence. Having
heroically failed to build a vacform Nimrod in
my modelling youth – an impulse purchase at
a Northern Show that no one seriously
believed I would nish – the opportunity to
build an injection-moulded Comet would have
been more than welcome.
In an age where every aircraft that the
Luftwaffe didn’t actually produce will sell in
any scale, and manufacturers are scouring
archives and reference sources for as-yet
unkitted Spit re variants, one can only marvel
at the commitment of smaller manufacturers,
and the many interesting and diverse kits still
coming on to the market. I am pleased to note
that enough of them are nding their way into
the pages of
SAM,
but anyone out there
considering contributing to our magazines, do
think about looking a little left of the
mainstream when you choose a subject. Get
those Avro Bisons started now!
