It may look like a rusting wreck and of course it is. But Peter Noble would rather see a motor slowly ending its days in this form than being quickly
cut up to be re-cycled into baked bean tins. Peter took this shot (and many more) at the huge Rush Green Motors complex at Hitchin in Hertfordshire
in August '06 and admits he's been to this end of life haven a total of 15 times. True, vehicles going in there might be robbed of parts but then their
remains are often left to spend their final days resting and totally at peace. When you think the pictured Diamond T 981 was built in the early '40s
as part of the war effort, it's earned the right to be left alone in its retirement. The preservation
movement doesn't always mean you have to fully restore a vehicle of old as Peter reckons that
just saving it from being cut up keeps its soul alive.

I
am writing this in early January
knowing the Oxford/AstraZeneca
vaccine has just started being rolled
out across the country. In my opinion,
this is excellent news for the heritage
commercial fraternity, as well as the
entire nation. It means events will once
again soon be taking place and visitor
attractions will be opening, giving
the opportunity to get in some much
needed lost revenue. So, let’s all do our
bit and get out there as soon as possible
and give our local events/attractions
our full support.

Happiness is a hand-
me-down
Sales of military surplus have long been a fantastic
source of all manner of hardware for Joe Public.
While leafing through his archives, Peter Noble
talks to Bob Tuck about some of these classics
of yesteryear which have given sterling service
once they’ve come into Civvy Street. In true
‘Strictly’ fashion, the pair also gives judgment on
each of these Golden Oldies as to how much of a
happiness factor they have also generated.

transport enthusiasts, but is also still held in high
regard by many in the road haulage industry
despite ceasing to trade in April 2001 as Michael
Marshall discovered.

Chicken Crusader
16 January 1991, was an auspicious day for all
devotees of Thornycroft vehicles as that day
saw the formation of the Thornycroft Society.
The society’s aims were, and continue to be,
to preserve veteran Thornycroft vehicles and
to display them at shows across the South of
England.

Sandbach sun and
shadows
Ed Burrows delves into the history of ERF, Britain’s
last independent truck make. Founded in 1933 by
ex-Foden director Edwin R Foden who thought the
family firm was driving in the wrong direction, ERF
was perhaps more innovative than credited for,
with firsts that include GRP cabs, disc brakes and
fail-safe spring brake systems.
The Foden publicity department was so
impressed with what Eddie Macginty had done
with one of their ten year-old demonstrators,
in ’96 they arranged for Clydebank based
photographer JA Hermit to travel across to
Lochgilphead to record this head-turning vehicle
in very impressive action.
T. French & Son is a family owned business, and
their fleet of vehicles operate all over the UK.
Founder Tom French has also been collecting
lorries for many years, as Bob Weir discovered.

from the early days of digital photography to
present a selection of images of trucks which were
everyday sights in the late 2000s but would now
be considered rarities.

Life’s a drag – Part 2
In our continuing look at the evolution of car
transporters, we pick up the story at the start of
the 1960s as new car sales were beginning to
boom. With five cars generally being the standard
load for most artics, hauliers turned to the wagon
and drag as a way of almost doubling that
capacity. But as Ken Glendinning explains to Bob
Tuck, it was to be the creations of Alastair Carter
who challenged convention by making room for
12 on his unique drawbar outfits.
Les Retro Pimpons et L’Autopompe is quite a
mouthful, but this French association, formed in
2002, has been doing a fine job rescuing old fire
appliances from the gas axe. Most of the trucks
are from the immediate areas of the Charente and
Haute-Vienne departments, which are adjoining
areas in Central South West France. ‘Seeing red’ has
always been associated with a negative emotion
like a rage or temper tantrum, but not in this case,
Monsieur Pezeaud and Son saw everything in red
and have spent many years pulling together a
great collection of red machines as Mike and Julie
Blenkinsop discovered.

A full set of Volvos
There are plenty of restored Volvos about, but few
can claim a full set of F86, F88, F7, F10, F12, FL10
and FH12. But up in Sheffield, there is one such
collection, including a couple of rare day-cabbed
F88s. Pip Dunn went to see them.
