Throughout the almost 120 years of sustained
manned, powered flight, quite often, it has been the
circumstances of the time that have turned a quite
mediocre, mundane aircraft into a classic, brought
about by extended usage way beyond its intended, or
expected ‘shelf life’.
If ever there was one that qualified for such ‘happy
accident’ status, then the Curtiss JN-4 ‘Jenny’ must surely
be one of those.
Conceived as a trainer aircraft for the Aviation Section
of U.S. Army Signals Corps, as a replacement for the
pusher-engine types then in use, a worrying incidence
of crashes and fatalities prompted the Signals Corps to
issue a requirement for a new trainer specifically of front-
engine tractor configuration.
American aviation pioneer Glenn L. Curtiss was already
established as a supplier of aircraft to the U.S. Military
and already had his tractor biplane Model J in the works.
However, to speed development along, he looked to
the ‘old world’, ‘poaching’ Douglas Thomas from the
Sopwith Aviation Company in UK, to further develop the
line that became the Curtiss JN-4.
Until U.S.A. entered WW1 in 1917, demand for the
Jenny had been relatively low compared to what was
going on in Europe, the first substantial production
going to the British Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval
Air Service, but by the end of 1918, all three U.S. Military
Services had acquired thousands.
Came the November 1918 Armistice and much of
this production was surplus to requirements, with Jennys
in their thousands being put up for sale at give-away
prices. It caused the immediate collapse of the U.S.
Aviation manufacturing industry, but gave exponential
impetus, in USA, to aviation and ‘airmindedness’ from
Barnstorming show-and-tell, to air mail service and all
sorts.
Today, more than 30 of the 9,000 Jenny’s still survive,
eleven in airworthy condition.
Unsurprisingly, the Jenny has long been a scale
modellers ‘favourite’, and is our major construction
feature this month. At 1:6.4 scale and 81.5” wingspan, for
.52-.75 size engines, it’s a nice size, inviting scale subject
with real character.
Cut parts are also available to accompany the plans.
